Razer introduces a gaming console reminiscent of Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch

Razer and Qualcomm have jointly introduced a new handheld for gaming. What kind of device is it and can or does it want to keep up with Valve’s Steam Deck?

With the Steam Deck Valve had introduced a handheld console that wants to make PC gaming more mobile than ever before. With that, Valve was quite ambitious and many are now waiting for the release of the Steam Deck.

Now another manufacturer has presented a mobile gaming device. Because Qualcomm has now announced at a press conference that it not only wants to bring new processors for mobile computers and smartphones to the market, but has also presented a gaming handheld.

This new mobile device is being developed in partnership with Razer, a company that many of you would be more likely to associate with mice, keyboards, and headsets.

What kind of device is that? In the pictures, the new gaming handheld is reminiscent of an Xbox controller with a built-in display.

The device presented so far is a so-called “Gaming Developer Kit”. This is not yet a fully-fledged console, but rather a demo device with which developers can try out things or functions.

Qualcomm and Razer had already announced some details about the new device:

  • Display: 6.65-inch OLED display with full HD + resolution and 10-bit HDR: the OLED display works at up to 120 Hz.
  • Camera: A 5MP / 1080p60 webcam with two microphones that allows gamers to record themselves playing and stream their games.
  • Connectivity: 5G mmWave and sub-6 as well as Wi-Fi 6E for low latency, fast uploads and downloads and a good connection.
  • The battery is said to have a capacity of 6000mAH and you can also connect many other devices thanks to the USB-C port.

Qualcomm sees massive potential in mobile gaming

In another statement, Qualcom explains in more detail that it sees great potential in the gaming area (via qualcomm.com).

  • Around 2.5 billion people gamble on mobile devices every day
  • All gamers together generate 175 billion US dollars in revenue each year, which is well ahead of the film industry (45 billion).

Qualcomm’s statement is also clear, because the new processor aims to further blur the boundaries between desktop, mobile and console. According to Qualcomm, the new “Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 Gaming Platform” should allow you to play whatever you want on all devices. The new processor should offer enough performance for it.

How successful could become such a device? So far there is only one developer kit for the new gaming handheld. In addition, there are no benchmarks or other resilient material on Qualcomm’s new platform.

On the other hand, you shouldn’t forget that Qualcomm can rely on years of experience in the mobile sector, because a Qualcomm processor is built into a number of smartphones. In addition, Qualcomm is one of the five largest semiconductor manufacturers in the world and has corresponding resources.
