Expand PS5 hard drive: Compatible SSDs, heat sinks and all requirements

The PS5 can now finally be expanded with suitable SSDs if you participate in the beta program.

For days now, many PS5 fans have been preoccupied with one question: which SSD can I use to expand the tight internal storage space? Sony has finally released the new system update for everyone and everyone can now use the memory slot with the new firmware. Here you will find the list of known SSDs that are suitable and also fit as PS5 memory expansion.

Last update on December 3rd: Current prices of the cheapest SSDs adjusted.

In addition, the freelance author Chris Werian has shed more light on another SSD for the PS5 for you. After the SSD from Western Digital, this time it’s about the PNY XLR8 CS3140.

Which SSD fits into the PS5 and meets all requirements?

There are already some: After only one manufacturer was able to officially confirm last week that the in-house SSD fits and works, more and more SSDs are now being added. That this goes so slowly is mainly due to the extensive requirements that the SSDs have to meet. It’s not just about interface and speed, but also about heatsink and dimensions.

You have to pay attention to this: Sony has given a very detailed list of the requirements for storage expansion SSDs. Sony does not guarantee if you install the wrong SSD or something breaks.

  • Form factor: The PS5 only supports M.2 types 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110.
  • Socket type: Socket 3 (Key M)
  • height: Total at most 11.25mm.

Compatible with PS5 – These SSDs fit and work:

But beware: With some of the SSDs listed here, you have to buy and attach a heat sink yourself. With some there is a heat sink, but it can be too big. That means you need a different, smaller one and have to replace it so that the SSD also fits into the PS5.

A few of these SSDs have not yet been officially confirmed, but still meet all the requirements and fit in terms of size.

The Gigabyte Aorus SSD is actually a tiny bit larger than the dimensions specified by Sony, but it still fits. This is stated by the manufacturer itself and also by the technology experts from Digital Foundry confirm this. Apparently, Sony prefers to exercise caution and cites more conservative values.

Heatsinks Compatible with the PS5:

Some SSDs require an additional heat sink because none is included or is too big. To make your search a little easier, we are listing the heatsinks that are compatible with the PS5.
