More and more developers are expressing their interest in the technology trend “NFT” and are building their own tokens into their games. Most recently, Ubisoft did it at Ghost Recon Breakpoint. But what is your opinion on the trend? Tell us.

These are NFTs: The acronym stands for “Non-fungible Tokens”, ie a non-replaceable digitally protected object. It is based on blockchain technology, which is also used by cryptocurrencies. The way in which the data is stored in blockchains makes it possible to prove the ownership rights to an NFT without a doubt.

Accordingly, the NFTs are used, for example, in the digital art trade, but are slowly finding their way into the gaming industry.

Advantages of the NFTs:

  • Items in games are no longer borrowed, but the players buy the ownership rights to them
  • The purchased NFTs can be resold to others
  • The purchased NFTs can increase in value and become a source of income

Disadvantages of the NFTs:

  • High power consumption that is harmful to the environment
  • Common cases of fraud such as the case of the NFT monkeys
  • NFTs that are bought for a lot of money can lose value significantly and become a loss for the buyer

Ubisoft has now also announced that they will be introducing NFTs in Ghost Recon Breakpoint. Players will be able to purchase in-game items as NFTs. Publishers like EA have also expressed an interest in the technology.
