The next battlefield is said to be a hero shooter à la Apex Legends

The specialists could be the focus in the next Battlefield.
The specialists could be the focus in the next Battlefield.

Even before the launch of Battlefield 2042 put Tom Henderson, a well-known leaker and industry insider, the Battlefield franchise in an identity crisis. The shooter is based too much on other titles such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare or the in-house Apex Legends. The final product seems to give Henderson at least a rudimentary right, and EA’s plans for a Battlefield universe (with many different games) also reveal that Battlefield is in a discovery phase.

The future of Battlefield: In a half-hour video, Henderson talks extensively about the problematic development of Battlefield 2042, which was supposedly planned as Battle Royale. The insider also wants to know what EA is planning next for the franchise.

Battlefield could soon become a hero shooter

Tom Henderson reportedly learned that the next title in the Battlefield franchise will be a hero shooter like Overwatch or Apex Legends. If so, the playable characters and their respective abilities would be even more in focus. The big battles would probably be a thing of the past, because in a hero shooter, relatively small teams usually compete against each other. Players take on a specific role (tank, healer, etc.) whose skills are essential for the outcome of a game.

Is that likely? In fact, we’re already seeing the first tendencies in this direction in Battlefield 2042. The Specialists all have a background story and different skills that dictate a particular style of play. This is very reminiscent of a hero shooter, even if the differences between the characters in the huge battles are not as apparent as in a small arena.

Henderson credibly describes that EA with the Battlefield universe is out to tap as many modern trends as possible. During the development of Battlefield 2042, the decision was probably made against Battle Royale and Hero Shooter in order not to scare off long-time fans. Instead, these concepts may now come as separate titles. Money, of course, plays the main role in this decision. Games like Fortnite and Apex Legends have been making tons of money for publishers for years.

Even if Tom Henderson is basically a relatively reliable source, these are rumors for the time being. Especially since the leaker himself says that EA’s plans can change at any time. To shed a little light on the matter, we ask for you at EA what the Hero Shooter in the Battlefield universe is all about.
