LoL: Players criticize new skin, which is based on Arcane, as dangerous “precedent”

In League of Legends there is a new skin for the hero Ekko, which is reminiscent of his role in the Netflix series “Arcane”. Even if the players think the skin is good, there is a very specific criticism of the “Firelight Ekko” skin: It is a lot more expensive than it should actually be.

What kind of skin is that?

  • It’s the newest skin for the LoL champ, Ekko. It was featured in a YouTube video on December 7th, 2021.
  • The “Ekko Firelight” skin plays on the role of Ekko in the Netflix series Arcane: For example, he pulls out a hoverboard when he teleports back to the base. He then also puts on a mask.
  • The skin is now on the test server and was presented in a YouTube video.

“Too little value to charge full price for skin”

What is the exact criticism of the skin? Although the skin itself is well received, there is a systemic criticism of it, because it should cost 1350 RP (about 10 €) – but that is not worth the skin in the current skin system from Riot Games.

  • A new model without new graphics or sound effects costs 750 RP
  • A skin with just some of the new elements costs 950 RP (about 7.50 €)
  • A skin for 1350 RP would have to have new graphics and sound effects for all abilities and recall to be worth the 1350 RP.

The new Firelight skin from Ekko does not offer any new sound effects. It has also been criticized that the mask cannot be put on and taken off at will. This was still possible with skins from earlier times.

LoL: Netflix fans play 4 Champs from Arcane much more often – but they fail with one

Has there ever been such a case? Yes, a user of Reddit says that in 2017 the skins of the esports team SKT1 would have been offered for sale for 1350 without them bringing new sound effects with them. After the protest, Riot Games had to give in and equip the expensive skins with their own sound effects. You have to do that now too.

People are asked to give Riot Games feedback that the skin either needs new sound effects or a lower price.

We looked extensively on MeinMMO with the rise of Riot Games and asked: is Riot the new Blizzard?

“They are shifting the bar”

Why is this so important to people? The supposed triviality that the skin is a bit too expensive or that sound effects are missing has received more than 10,000 upvotes on reddit.

People take this very seriously and say that no precedent should be set here.

One user explains: In the past, most of the cool skins only cost 975 RP, only a few that were even better were available for 1350 RP and the even more expensive ones were incredibly good. Today all skins would cost 1350 RPs by default and only crap skins would cost 975.

Riot Games would shift the standards here – a kind of silent skin inflation, so to speak. Apparently you don’t want to let the developers get away with that. One user says not to let this skin set a precedent.

Skins are always a big topic in LoL:
