After 20 years there is a new “Dune” strategy game

With “Dune” and “Dune II” the long-disbanded Westwood Studios (“Command and Conquer”) founded the genre of real-time strategy games in the early 1990s, released in 1998 (“Dune 2000”) and 2001 (“Emperor: Battle for Dune”) two more successors. Since then, however, it has become quiet about real-time strategy on Frank Herbert’s desert planet. In 2022 that should finally change with “Dune: Spice Wars”.

Funcom announced the mix of round and real-time strategy games in the course of the Game Awards and wants to start the Early Access Beta on Steam in 2022 with “Dune: Spice Wars”. It is being developed by the French studio Shiro Games, which has already made a name for itself with the Viking strategy game “Northgard”. Developers promise diverse ways of playing. “Spice Wars” has several playable factions with their own strengths and weaknesses. Fixed starters are the rival aristocratic houses Atreides and Harkonnen, further factions are to be announced. Players can achieve the goal in different ways: Control over the spaceman drug Spice on the desert planet Arrakis. Gamers can send out agents, sabotage, spy on and assassinate opponents, but they can also use political tactics and amass wealth to the other houses through technological and economic To defeat superior power. Or they can simply look for open war. “Dune” remake was a complete success The fact that a new “Dune” strategy game has been announced is hardly surprising: Director Denis Villeneuve only brought a remake of the science fiction classic in September – see trailer in the cinemas, which was well received by the audience. A sequel is already fixed. Funcom is accompanying the reinterpretation in the gaming area and, in addition to “Spice Wars”, is also working on an online role-playing game in the “Dune” universe, which, according to Gamestar.de, is expected to appear in 2023 – in time for the second part the remake planned by Villeneuve as a great trilogy.
