Gaming monitor for € 2,200 inspires testers – who is it worth buying for?

With the Odyssey Neo G9, Samsung has presented a high-end monitor for gamers. In the meantime, testers have been able to try it out and are enthusiastic. The biggest disadvantage is the high price of more than 2,000 euros.

This is what it’s about: With the Odyssey Neo G9, Samsung has introduced a huge 49-inch gaming monitor. This is the manufacturer’s new top model for the gaming sector and with a recommended price of 2,199 euros you are quite confident.

But what do you get for the money and what do the testers say about the monitor? MeinMMO introduces you to the first tests and explains for whom the expensive investment could be worthwhile.

“Brighter and more colorful than anything you’ve seen before.”

The first tests of the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 are all pretty impressed with the new monitor. The testers of the rtings.com magazine explain that they have never seen such good “local dimming” as with this monitor (via rtings.com).

“Local dimming” is a special technology for LED televisions to regulate the brightness of the display.

The testers also add that the monitor offers excellent contrast and deep black and is also very suitable for dark rooms. Rtings rates the monitor in the gaming area with 8.5 out of 10 points. Above all, there is criticism of some errors that appear in combination with VRR. This is a synchronization technique to prevent image artifacts.

The testers of Techradar magazine are also consistently impressed by the monitor (via techradar.com). The monitor offers rich colors and great brightness. In addition, the monitor delivers black values that the testers have never seen on any monitor. But a monitor like this also requires a lot of power:

Because the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 is not only large and high-resolution, it is also brighter and more colorful than anything you’ve seen before. And when you combine that with the high refresh rate, it’s a piece of gaming heaven that you absolutely want to be a part of. But with the high refresh rate and high resolution you run into a big problem: performance.

The testers of “The Verge” magazine also explain that gaming on such a large monitor takes getting used to (via theverge.com). Because the picture is more often distorted and blurry, as many developers do not develop their games for such large monitors:

Super ultrawide gaming is wonderful, but strange. Playing on the Odyssey G9 and Neo G9 is incredibly immersive, but it’s also literally skewed in ways that I don’t always find comfortable because the game developers never built multiprojection into their games.

For whom is a gaming monitor worth 2,200 euros?

Who is the monitor aimed at? It should be clear to those interested that you need the appropriate hardware to actually operate this monitor.

In order to achieve the 240Hz at full resolution, you need at least an RTX 2080 or an RTX 3080. An RTX 3090 is even better if you want to achieve the 240 Hz at least to some extent. The monitor is therefore primarily aimed at enthusiasts.

When gaming you also have to note that the games also support large resolutions. How much the differences make at 32: 9, has GameStar presented in an article. Among other things, GameStar looked at how much performance 32: 9 costs compared to 16: 9.

In competitive games you have the advantage that you have a greater range of vision than players who gamble at 16: 9. Other games like Overwatch try to create an artificial zoom so that resolutions like 21: 9 and 16: 9 are similar and there is no advantage for gamers.

For whom is it worth it? The gaming monitor is primarily aimed at enthusiasts who do not just want to buy a simple screen. The prerequisite here is not only the money, but also correspondingly powerful hardware so that you can take full advantage of the monitor.

If you don’t want to compromise on image quality and features, the Odyssey Neo G9 is an excellent monitor. With Mini-LED and HDR 2000 you get the latest technology and with VRR and HDMI 2.1 there are also functions that you can use with your PS5 or Xbox Series X.

For whom is it not worth it? 2,200 euros is a lot of money for a monitor and you also need powerful hardware so that you can use the monitor at all. If you still gamble on older hardware, the monitor is only partially worthwhile for gaming.

By the way, we present good gaming monitors that are currently recommended in this article. These are not only suitable for the gaming PC, but also for Xbox Series X | S and PS5.
