Is Pokémon Gen 9 playing in India? Sword / shield could indicate setting
An exciting Pokémon theory is currently making the rounds. This suggests that for years the series of games has repeatedly built in thick fat teasers in the form of mystical Pokémon that indicate the next generation and the setting. That could have been the case with Pokémon Sword and Shield as well, with Zarude. That may mean that according to Pokémon legends Arceus, the ninth generation is heading to India. Another Leaker’s teaser is in the same direction.
Pokémon: Mysterious Pokémon may always tease the next generation
What’s the matter? The fan theory of Pokémon YouTuber Lockstin & Gnoggin presents the following idea: The mystical Pokémon of a generation always point to the next generation and the associated setting. That can be quite convincing if we look at the last generations and Mystical Pokémon.
- Gen 7: Magearna, Meltan and Melmetal revolve around nuts and bolts, suggesting the sword and shield design based on the England of the Industrial Revolution.
- Gen 6: Diancie, Hoopa and Volcanion would again go very well with the wormhole story surrounding the Alola region and the volcanic islands.

What is the theory behind the 9th generation Pokémon setting?
Gen 8: Zarude could accordingly also give clues as to what awaits us in Gen 9. More precisely, many fans now believe that the ninth generation of Pokémon could be based in India. Zarude’s bracelet looks a lot like Indian jewelry and Zarude himself is probably based on animals like the bearded monkey, other macaques or gibbons. All of them can also be found in India or at least are at home nearby.
Even more teasers: Pokémon insider Eclipse didn’t get the video from Lockstin & Gnoggin a lot of attention until some time after it was originally published through a retweet. Shortly afterwards, a picture was tweeted on the same account showing Mount Kailash aka Kailas or Gang Rinpoche. It’s not in India, but in neighboring Tibet.

The Kailash is a holy and very spiritual mountain for many people and religions. Both Hinduism and Buddhism, as well as several other beliefs, have many different legends that revolve around the mountain. So the tweeted image could have a whole bunch of different meanings and not just indicate the setting in India or Tibet.
More about Pokémon:
Don’t rejoice too soon: Of course, these considerations and possible teasers are not yet official announcements. So you should still enjoy all of this with due caution until we know more about the ninth generation of Pokémon games. It should take a while until then, now the next thing is Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
What do you think of the theory and the possible Pokémon setting of Gen 9?
