The current generation of consoles is slowly gaining momentum. Most new games are still released for last-gen devices, but the Unreal Engine 5 demo in the Matrix universe shows us what would be possible on the PS5 and Xbox Series X. One game that could offer similar graphic power in a finished product is Forspoken by Square Enix. The publisher revealed some details about the technology of the action role-playing game.

Forspoken comes with ray tracing, but that comes at a price

As with so many other titles for the new consoles, with Forspoken we have to decide which mode we want to play in.

Yes, that means there is again no 4K resolution at 60 FPS, but at least we have a choice. A ray tracing option is also available – however, it is not yet known what restrictions we will have to accept for the complex technology. Here is an overview of the graphics modes:

  • Performance: 1440p, 60 FPS
  • Resolution: 4K, 30 FPS
  • Raytracing: 1440p, 30 FPS (estimated)

Open world draws resources: The aforementioned matrix demo offers 4K and ray tracing, but it starts to stutter, especially when driving a car. In addition, the environment is relatively limited. Forspoken, on the other hand, will offer a real open world, and such a game world is quite complex in itself. In addition, the surroundings and the magic effects look very impressive. Perhaps some linear games will create the desirable 4K / 60 on the PS5 in the future.

Speaking of magic: Square promises us that each of Frey’s sayings should not only look different but also feel different (via Ungeek):

We have integrated haptic feedback for the adaptive triggers when you use the different types of magic. There are a ton of different spells out there, and the designers have worked hard to make each controller’s feedback feel different.

We owe the fact that we can sense magic, of course, to the DualSense controller of the PS5, which can simulate different surfaces and structures with its haptic feedback. How that could feel in practice has already been shown by other titles. For example, the rumble function wafts away when we light a torch in Demon’s Souls. If Frey shoots an ice projectile, however, there could be a short but hard jerk. Whether close combat or long-range combat, Forspoken seems to have the right magic for every purpose.

Forspoken will be released on May 24, 2022 (console) exclusively for the Playstation 5.
