LoL has a new super team in 2022: “Welcome to the Church!”

2022 will apparently be the year of the “super teams” at League of Legends. While experienced professionals are drawn to Team Vitality in Europe, in South Korea, of all things, the rather staid Gen.G now brings together some exciting players with a long history. Above all the exceptional talent Chovy – he is now finding a strong team again and he meets old friends from the days of “Team Griffin”, a team that broke up under a brilliant coach.

What is a “super team”?

  • The term “super team” comes from the language of musicians. It is called a “supergroup” when musicians come together who have already been successful as soloists. At LoL, one speaks of a “super team” when players join a new team who have already achieved star status.
  • In Europe in 2022 the “Vitality” team will be traded as a super team. With Selfmade they already had an excellent jungler, with Midlaner Perkz and Top-Laner Alphari they now have two European superstars who were still playing in the USA in 2021. In addition, botlaner Carzzy from LEC master MAD Lions is brought in.
  • In South Korea, of all things, the staid Gen. G is creating a new super team. They already had the legendary ADC Ruler under contract, now they are supplementing it with a mixture of veterans and new talent. 3 of the new players have already played together in “Team Griffin”.

In the USA, too, “Team Liquid” creates a kind of super team. You don’t have a single US player in the squad:

Gen.G – a solid, but somehow boring top team

What is the reputation of Gen.G? Gen.G is considered to be the arch rival of SKT1. This stems from the time about 5 years ago when the Midlaner “Ambition” (now 29) was considered an alternative to Faker. Gen.G was still called Samsung Galaxy at the time and spectacularly won the 2017 World Cup against Faker, who was obviously hard hit by the defeat at the time.

In recent years, Gen.G had become a rather staid team that played solidly but caused little stir. They were considered a typical, methodically playing Korean LoL team, while the fans wanted to see the explosive style of DAMWON Gaming or even cheered SKT1, the legendary team from South Korea.

Gen.G now has a world champion and 2 super talents

Who will play for Gen.G in 2022? The central new signing is the Midlaner Chovy. He did the trick of going to the last 3 worlds with 3 different teams, each time he was the central anchor point of his teams. However, both Team Griffin (2019) and DRX (2020) crashed spectacularly after their respective Worlds participations.

Chovy has gone from an exciting young talent to one of the best LoL players in the world. In contrast to other super midlaners like Doinb or Showmaker, he had little help with this. On his last team, Hanwha Esports, Chovy was so dominant and so clearly the best player on the team that Hanwha Esports was referred to as the “Church of Chovy”.

When Gen. G signed Chovy, they recorded the meme and tweeted, “Welcome to Church.”

Top-Laner, Doran (2021), an old team-mate of Chovy with whom he played from 2018 to 2020, first for Griffin, then for DRX, is also new to Gen.G. Doran is considered an incredibly talented top laner who is now reunited with Chovy.

In the jungle, Gen.G relies on the returnee Peanut, who already played for Gen.G in the jungle in 2019 and who was the starting jungler for SKT1 in 2017, i.e. for the team that lost so painfully to Gen.G in the World Cup final. The 23-year-old is an experienced veteran who will probably take over shot calling at Gen.G. His coach confirms that he is now making clever and sophisticated announcements: Every decision is very good and he is excellent at using the resources in the game.

As ADC, Gen.G relies on Ruler, the last player on their team to become Samsung Galaxy World Champion in 2016. The 22-year-old ruler is considered extremely strong in the laning phase.

The 22-year-old South Korean Lehends will play as a supporter for Gen.G. He’s probably the only one on the team without a big name. He comes from Affreeca Freeks. Lehends, however, already played for Griffin with Chovy in 2018 – then for the team with Doran and Chovy in 2019.

In 2017, Coach discovered 3 players who are now world stars

This is noticeable in the squad: What resonates with the team line-up is a strong focus on former Team Griffin players. This is a special story:

  • Team Griffin were absolute no-names in 2017, playing in the second, South Korean league.
  • They hired a coach named “cvMax” who had no experience in LoL. Usually someone like that never becomes a head coach. But cvMax convinced the manager to give him a chance and then demonstrated an incredible sense of talent. He discovered new players and shaped them. He gave many players their first professional contract that no one had on the slip before.
  • The players that cvMax discovered during his time at Griffin have become super stars in LoL in 2021: In addition to Midlaner Chovy, he also discovered Jungler Tarzan (LNG Esports) and Botlaner Viper, two of the world’s best players today. Viper even became world champion in 2021 with EDward Gaming.
  • The Griffin team broke up because of scandals and controversy. cvMax fell in disguise for allegedly strangling a player. That was the top laner Sword – at that time there was the controversy that cvMax would rather let Doran play.

In 2022, the rather staid team from Gen.G will apparently try to take on the inheritance of cvMax and benefit from the fruits of its work. In addition to Chovy, Doran and Lehends, you would have loved to have also brought Viper and Tarzan – but they are priceless today. But with Peanut and Ruler you got high quality.
