A Russian processor wants to be a cheap alternative to AMD and Intel – does it work?

AMD and Intel currently dominate the market for processors. Now a Russian company has presented several processors – but what can they do?

If you want to buy a processor for your gaming PC, you can hardly ignore AMD and Intel at the moment. Because these two manufacturers produce most of the chips that users buy. AMD dominates the sales figures on Amazon, while Intel has now released the latest generation of processors.

However, a Russian company has now presented a set of processors with which one would like to reach not only professional customers but also general consumers such as gamers. While the server CPUs are primarily intended for large customers, they also have something for gamers in their portfolio.

But what can the Baikal-M actually do and can it really be an alternative for AMD and Intel? MeinMMO took a look at the processors.

British chip is the basis for the Russian processor

Which company is behind the processors? The Russian company “Baikal Electronics” manufactures the processors that operate under the name “Baikal”. Baikal Electronics belongs to the Russian company “T-Platforms”, which specializes primarily in supercomputers for states and universities.

What kind of processor is that? The architecture of the British chip manufacturer ARM is used inside the processor. So far, these have mainly been used in mobile devices. For the development of the processor, the Russian government made a two-digit million sum available (via winfuture.de).

The processor itself is an 8 core with 8 ARMv8 cores and an integrated graphics unit. Baikal Electronics uses 28 nanometer manufacturing for the manufacturing process. The CPU supports 32 GB of RAM and delivers a clock frequency of 1.5 GHz.

How fast is the processor? If you trust the table with benchmarks that the manufacturer itself offers, the Baikal-M should achieve 1542 points in the multi-core test in Geekbench (via baikalelectronics.com).

Compared to AMD’s popular Ryzen 5 3600, however, this is not very much, since the CPU achieved 6667 points in the multi-core test. AMD’s entry-level processor with a dedicated graphics chip, the Ryzen 3 3200G, with 2829 points also manages twice as much as the Baikal-M.

If you take these numbers as performance values, then the Baikal-M shouldn’t be any real competition for AMD. And it is not yet clear whether the processor will even be available in Germany.

Are the processors also coming to Germany?

Can I buy the processor anywhere? It is not yet clear whether the processors will really make it to Europe. At least the manufacturer had stated that they wanted to produce 10,000 to 15,000 processors every month (via gizchina.com).

But that does not mean that they will come to us soon. If you trust the previous sources, then the first batches of processors should go mainly to government agencies and schools. The source that Winfuture quotes speaks of the fact that you want to make yourself independent of the major American chip manufacturers.

There is a lot going on, and not just in the processor market. Another manufacturer has presented new graphics cards, but they are neither from AMD nor from Nvidia. Now some gamers are hoping that there could soon be an inexpensive alternative here.
