17 Terms Every Real MMO Gamer Knows – Do You Know What They Mean?

What are these terms? Ever since video games have existed (and actually well before that), players abbreviate certain things or find terms that describe a certain circumstance. In the meantime, it has almost developed into a language of its own: the gamer jargon.

Those who are not in the scene may not understand a word. But behind each of these terms there is something that gamers can use to quickly and precisely share information with others.

What are these terms for? This is important in many games so that other players can react quickly. After all, interaction is one of the most important factors and the unique selling point of MMOs. Since these terms became more and more common over time, there are even correct vocabulary books, such as for raids in Destiny 2.

Such “social conventions” in the gaming world serve to convey information as compactly and clearly as possible. Hence the fact that the color coding for rare items is almost always the same.

The terms that we have put together for you here come from all possible genres, from MMORPGs to shooters. Some of them are a bit more specific, others are more general and many you should already know.

Abbreviation for a PvP round that went particularly quickly (“top-time kombat”, originally from Mortal Kombat)

Time required to kill an opponent in a shooter (“time to kill”)

Special term for players who identify too strongly with a comic or similar and mention it at every opportunity (from: “Teen Titans kiddo”)

Describes skills that happen after the character’s death (“after one’s death”)

An effect that covers an area (“area of effect”)

Actually German and relatively new term to mock opponents (“attack or honorless”)

Aiming over the rear sight and front sight (“aim down sights”)

The estimated damage per second to an object (“approximate damage [per] second“)

Collegial saying of German gamers when they don’t like something (“Dude, that sucks”)

A class in an MMOPRG that uses a particularly large number of companions (“beast master”)

Bad behavior towards an already inferior opponent (“bad manner”)

A particularly strong opponent (“boss mob”)

The search for group members or a group (“looking for group / looking for members”)

The request for gold or money (“looking for gold / looking for money”)

The offer of sexual acts for gold or money, particularly popular in the so-called erotic role-playing game (“love for gold / love for money”)

Mixed Martial Rats – an old video game for the NES in which rats compete against each other using mixed martial arts (MMA)

Describes the rating according to which it is determined which opponents you will face (“matchmaking rating”)

A setting that makes it possible to set markings on the map so as not to lose your orientation (“mark my road”)

Old term for common character values in role-playing games (“Perception, Endurance, Boldness, Charisma, Agility, Kindness”)

Term for particularly incompetent users (“problem exists between chair and keyboard”)

You made it up, it doesn’t even exist!

A particularly resilient character with a strong defense

A character who acts as a “tank” for others by providing them with resources such as mana

A particularly strong character with high damage

Frivolous indication that a female character shows too much cleavage

Damage in a game that radiates from a target to bystanders (“splitting”)

Term used to warn that there is a dangerous cliff in front of the group

Indicates that you are briefly away from the PC or the console, for example to make tea

The use of heavy weapons on a thin line, most of which have funny effects

This repeated crouching on a defeated opponent to press his genitals into his face

The controlled cultivation of cabbages, a term from games that rely on crafting and housing

Skills that can be used by particularly charismatic characters to stir up or appease a crowd (from the pen and paper)

Skills that control opponents, such as freeze or stun

Actually TILT for “This Instance Lacks Trolls”, a term from the pen and paper that players use when a dungeon seems boring to them

Skills, mostly from bosses, that make the battle arena tilt to one side

A state in which players no longer think clearly, mostly because they are particularly irritable

Denotes that a spell that unfolds its effect several times over a period of time has been cast once

A bug or mistake that sometimes causes a character to do things unintentionally, like raise their leg

A player who takes advantage of others and makes no effort to achieve something himself

Water-type damage – rarely seen in games

Important damage against a so-called “splash” opponent, who is dangerous for the whole group because he attacks everyone in the area

Damage that is normally cast on a specific target or originates from an object, but radiates from it to the environment

Name for players who prefer to play smaller characters (gnomes, goblins, dwarves, halflings …)

An annoying, blue goblin who annoys old people very persistently and feeds primarily on toadstool

Name for the new account or second account of a mostly strong player

Has nothing to do with MMOs – actually stands for the music genre “Progressive Rock / Classic”

Term for a player who is very self-respecting and does not hide it

The triggering of an effect that can be activated randomly
