Another shooter is growing on PS4 and PS5 thanks to Halo Infinite – what’s going on?

Splitgate started its Open Beta in August 2021 and has been running on PC, PlayStation and Xbox since then. In November there was a surge in new players – and this is supposedly thanks to a shooter that is actually competition: Halo Infinite.

What kind of shooter is that? Splitgate was released in Early Access on Steam in May 2019 and really took off in August 2021. The shooter reached over 67,000 simultaneous players on Steam alone, together with Xbox and PlayStation it should have been over 200,000. More than the servers could take.

In Splitgate you play in arenas and at high speed, similar to the classic Quake or Unreal Tournament. The main thing is that you can create portals and travel wildly across the map.

The style is strongly reminiscent of the popular Halo series and Splitgate has already received the subtitle: “Halo meets Portal”. The game became so popular in a short period of time that the developers had to cancel the release date.

How’s it going with Splitgate? In the meantime, the hype about Splitgate on Steam has subsided and an average of around 2,000 players are still playing (via steamcharts.com). The ratings on the PC platform are still “very positive”.

However, the numbers on PlayStation should have increased since November 2021, as the boss Ian Proulx reveals (via TheLoadout.com). And that shouldn’t be a coincidence, as he says: the reason for this is the release of Halo Infinite.

In the 2021 recap there is the success of Splitgate again in the video.

“Halo Infinite and Splitgate help each other”

How does Halo Infinite help Splitgate? The newest part of Halo is only available on PC and Xbox. Accordingly, PlayStation players who would like to play an arena shooter cannot participate.

However, since Halo and Splitgate are very similar, PS gamers have at least one alternative. They also seem to use them, as is reflected in the number of players, according to the boss.

By the way, a version of Splitgate optimized for the PS5 should also appear in 2022 – probably thanks in part to the $ 100 million that suddenly came as a financial injection. Exactly when, however, has not yet been revealed. Either way, projects like Splitgate show that indie projects do a lot of things right:

2 “small” indie games on Steam do one thing a lot better than the big AAA titles

How does Splitgate help Halo Infinite? Since more people are generally interested in arena shooters, Splitgate should serve as an entry into the genre. The boss says:

I really think Halo Infinite and Splitgate will help each other out in the long run. There’s so much noise and so much battle royales right now – and [diese beiden Spiele] bring people to the arena shooter genre. There are tons of kids who have never played Quake or Unreal Tournament […] Bringing you in touch with it now is good for the genre as a whole.

The interest in Halo Infinite and Splitgate is certainly also due to the fact that the other big shooter titles in 2021 were rather sobering for many fans. For this reason alone, both games appear in our list of alternatives:
