Mario Kart 9 is supposedly called Mario Kart 10 and could be like Smash Bros.

In addition to Link, many more characters from other IPs could appear in the next Mario Kart.
In addition to Link, many more characters from other IPs could appear in the next Mario Kart.

The rumors are growing that the Switch could get its own brand new Mario Kart after all. Allegedly, Nintendo is announcing the next part this year and could possibly release it in 2022 – originally there were even rumors about a 2021 release.

Should it actually come to that, the path taken with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe would probably be continued by receiving routes and characters from many other franchises.

Why Mario Kart 10 ?! Strangely enough, the tweet from the leaker group LeakyPandy does not speak of Mario Kart 9, but of Mario Kart 10. Nintendo Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit or Mario Kart Tour may count as the ninth part of the series. LeakyPandy also has one further explanation for this circumstance. Perhaps the final name has not yet been decided.

Mario Kart 10 has to offer us more than Deluxe

MK8 Deluxe is too successful: In fact, the high sales of Mario Kart 8 on the Switch have prevented a new offshoot so far. The game is the absolute front runner on the console with around 39 million units sold – only Animal Crossing: New Horizons can keep up with this to some extent.

MK10 with Smash Bros. approach? I have already recorded in a column how the next Mario Kart can still be relevant. As in the DLCs of MK8 (which are already included in Deluxe), it has to take over drivers, tracks, music and items from other brands. We can already drive through Hyrule and Animal Crossing Village.

Here you read the mentioned column:

I only need Mario Kart 9 if it becomes the series' Smash Bros. Ultimate

I only need Mario Kart 9 if it becomes the series’ Smash Bros. Ultimate

The subtitle “Crossroads” mentioned by LeakyPandy (in German junction, but also figuratively stands for a new beginning) suggests that it will really turn out that way.

The question is whether Mario Kart will only be expanded to include Nintendo franchises or whether we will also get third-party brands, as with Smash Bros. Chris Redfield throwing rocks? The Solid Snake hidden under a box? Simon Belmont, who snatches a tank from us with his whip? The possibilities would be endless.

How trustworthy is the source? LeakyPandy is a group of leakers who have a pretty good reputation in the community. For example, the Fortnite release for the Switch was correctly predicted. However, this is only hearsay. Even if the aforementioned projects exist, we don’t know if they will ever see the light of day.

More alleged Nintendo projects for 2022

The other titles mentioned by LeakyPandy also sound plausible and make the leak more believable. There have been rumors about Pikmin 4 for years, and another spin-off for the Xenoblade series is quite believable. Only Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 4 with Crytek as the development studio would be a real surprise. The last part of the space shooting appeared in 2003 for the Gamecube.

We ask for you at Nintendo what the alleged leak is all about and we will keep you up to date.

Which characters and tracks would you like to see in the next Mario Kart?
