Destiny 2 is throwing new players into an almost impossible task – “frustrating as hell”

In Destiny 2, it is not easy for NewLight players who play for the first time. The free anniversary activity “Trials of Eternity” should actually be a funny game show activity with a horse. But new players are currently experiencing hell on a competitive level and with nasty champions.

Actually, the “Trials of Eternity” promise new players free content, funny Xur comments and an impossible horse. But what sounds fun is currently a really frustrating first experience for new players in Destiny 2.

What kind of a job is that? Immediately after the game starts, Bungie automatically brings its “New Lights” to the anniversary activity “Trials of Eternity”. There they are not only underpowered with light level 1100. Even without legendary equipment, you face the strongest opponents in Destiny 2 with almost no chance.

  • The event activity has a minimum power level of 1150. New players start with 1100, so they play almost immediately at the competition level.
  • The activity contains champions of all kinds that can only be properly defeated with the right mods.
  • Players had to fight for up to an hour in places, which is very frustrating.

NewLight players are in the “test of courage of eternity” at competitive level.

It’s understandable that this is not a good start to the game for new players, given such a bad experience. With power level 1100 you are practically a “one-shot” of almost all NPCs.

The activity has been running for almost a month now, and Bungie has not changed anything at the entry point for new players since then. Was it overlooked here that NewLight players at power level 1100 do not have any champion mods at all?

Players report negative initial experiences

In the meantime, more and more NewLight players are reporting about their negative entry-level experiences and also experienced Destiny 2 players, such as Hajoamine, show on redditHow devastating the “tests of courage of eternity” can be when you are just getting started:

Told in frustration [ein Freund] me that it actually took almost an hour to finish the activity. He told me that nobody in there knew what to do, they failed on all other encounters and spent over 30 minutes beating the final boss. Sounds great fun, doesn’t it? […] At first I didn’t believe him. But when I joined him for another run, everyone but me was Level 1 [Seasonrang].

It also affects the experience of more experienced Destiny 2 players. So reported iamthedayman21 on reddit:

Played last night and got a couple of single digit levels on my team. I was the only one who got buffs and destroyed crystals. I was also the only one who defused mines in the next section. It was frustrating as hell!

Matchmaking brings many underpowered players together into the activity.

This is why the activity is not simply canceled: Experienced players would argue that after all, this activity does not have to be played, but can.

But NewLight players are often unaware of this fact, especially at the beginning of the game. Many assume they need to play through this automatically started activity. So they fight their way through the entire activity 50 levels underpowered and without champion mods. “It feels like an ‘Xur Kidnapping you’-vibe to them.”

What does Bungie think of this negative player experience? the Bungie cozmo23’s community manager has now contacted reddit. He told the players there that they would be looking into the issue to improve the experience.

We sent this issue to the team to investigate. Hopefully we can make the first interaction with the fantastic horse more positive with new lights.

Our recommendation for NewLight players: Should you start with Destiny 2 and also get into this situation, then you can cancel the anniversary activity “Trials of Eternity” at any time.

Like Bungies, the event will be game director Joe Blackburn recently on twitter announced that you will be in the game even longer: You can also play this at a later point in time when you have received your champion mods from the artefact of season 15 and legendary equipment.

Players don’t want to be pushed into activities: The players are now hoping that Bungie will soon take a different approach to the event. Especially so that the entry is less frustrating for new players. Basically, nobody should be pushed into an activity where you have no chance of winning anyway, as the players on reddit emphasize again and again. The entry should be regulated via the power level and the game should automatically recognize if someone does not yet have the required light level.

Did you know the “Trials of Eternity” are so extremely frustrating for NewLight players? What are your experiences? Did you meet many Season Rank 1 players in the tests of courage? Will you pay attention to this in the future and help newcomers?
