Playstation VR2 for PS5: First specs for glasses and controllers

Now we know what PSVR2 can do.
Now we know what PSVR2 can do.

The sparrows have been calling it from the rooftops for some time – and although it was wrongly said that Sony would be around the corner with its own VR event in December, some information has come true. Instead of having its own show, Sony presented the new VR headset for the PlayStation 5 as part of the CES 2022 (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas. The official name: PlayStation VR2. The new VR controller: Sense. The specs: Quite impressive.

This is the data from PSVR2

PlayStation VR2 should be a real next-gen pair of glasses. In addition to the resolution (4K with HDR), there are a few other functions that should accomplish this. Instead of the complex tracking by an external camera, PSVR2 has built-in cameras that can transfer your movements directly into the games. Even the movements of your eyes are registered. In connection with a rumble function of the headset, 3D audio and the new controllers, a new level of immersion should be achieved (via PlayStation-Blog).

Here you can see an overview of the published specs for PSVR2:

  • Display: YOU ARE
  • Resolution: 2000×2040 per eye
  • Refresh rate: 90Hz, 120Hz
  • Field of View: about 110 Grad
  • Sensors:
    • Bewegungssensoren: Six-Axis (Three-Axis Gyroscope, Three-Axis accelerometer)
    • Cameras: 4 cameras for tracking the headset and the controller, one IR camera each for tracking the eyes
  • Feedback: Vibration through the headset
  • Communication with the PS5: USB-C
  • Audio:
    • Input: built-in microphone
    • Output: Connection for stereo headphones

Unfortunately, there are no pictures yet, but a patent could at least give us an approximate idea of the VR glasses:

When does PSVR2 come out? Sony did not have any new information on this point. However, there are rumors that the headset will be launched later this year. Another leak reveals that mass production could start soon. Let’s hope Sony gets enough hardware components together.

And that is the VR controller Sense

The controllers, of which we have already seen pictures, were also discussed again. You can expect a big leap here after the outdated Move technology that PSVR uses on the PS4. Based on the DualSense of the PS5, the new VR controller is simply called Sense.

New Horizon game announced for VR

The first first-party title for the new VR glasses was also briefly presented. It is a spin-off of Horizon Zero Dawn called Horizon Call of the Mountain. The announcement confirms rumors that Sony would like to implement more of its big brands for VR in the future. We have summarized all information about the game in a separate article:
