DiRT 5 is one of the titles that will offer 120 FPS.

Most games for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X / S so far have aimed at 60 FPS at a high resolution. Some titles go a step further, mostly lowering the picture quality but ultimately reaching 120 FPS. But which games support it and what exactly does it bring you to play with a better frame rate?

All PS5 games that support 120 FPS

So far, only native PS5 versions support 120 FPS on the PS5. With backwards compatible games you have to do without the higher frame rates. The only exception here recently is Call of Duty: Warzone.

120 FPS are not that important to you? We list all games with 4K and 60 FPS for you:

The most obvious advantage of 120 FPS

The buttery soft display makes games appear even clearer. For example, a higher frame rate reduces motion blur. This means that the environment is less blurred, even with fast tracking shots. This should help to keep track of things, especially in hectic titles.

It is unlikely that all next-generation games will support 120 FPS. Keeping such a high frame rate constant is usually at the expense of the graphics. Epochal single-player adventures may run at 60 FPS, but in a crisp 4k resolution.

More pictures, less lag

It is more likely that most multiplayer titles will get a 120 FPS mode. Racing and sports games, fighting games and shooters are the most obvious candidates, as Halo Infinite shows, among others. Because such games are most likely to benefit from what is probably the greatest advantage of high frame rates: the drastically reduced input lag.

To understand: Input lag describes the time that elapses between the arrival and the output of the image signal.

Screens with a refresh rate of 60 Hertz show a new image every 16.67 milliseconds at 60 FPS. 120hz screens only need half the time at 120 FPS. In practice, this means, for example, being able to recognize opponents more quickly or to be able to react more quickly to their maneuvers.

Especially with fast shooters (here the Halo Infinite campaign) 120 FPS can be advantageous.

Especially with fast shooters (here the Halo Infinite campaign) 120 FPS can be advantageous.

If you want to reduce the input lag to a minimum, you also have to be careful when choosing your screen. Each screen has specific response times. They indicate how long a color change takes. Slow response times at a high frame rate lead to streaks, as the screen cannot keep up with the display of the many frames.

Monitors with a high refresh rate often have a response time of only 1 ms; The latest televisions are now leveling off at a good 6 to 7 ms in 120hz mode. For comparison: the response time of the same television set is 12 to 14 ms in 60hz mode.

We have already found out for you which televisions can not only display high frame rates without problems, but also 4k and 8k content.

Good news: For less input lag, a 120hz screen is not a must. Although 60hz screens cannot display 120 FPS, they still get 120 frames per second. The game events shown are always more up-to-date than in games with 60 FPS. Your input lag is still higher than with 120hz devices because of the lower refresh rate.

Variable Refresh Rate (VRR): 120 FPS in particular benefit greatly from the VRR function. With VRR, the TV can adapt to the frame rate of the console. This prevents screen tearing when playing and reduces the input lag. So far only supported on the Xbox Series X / S, the PS5 will get it later via update.

Is crossplay becoming more balanced?

Should 120 FPS become the standard in console multiplayer in the future, this could also ensure more balanced matches between PC and PlayStation or XBox players. In multiplayer titles for PC, 144 FPS or even 240 FPS have been the standard for years. Of course, the few milliseconds difference are barely noticeable and almost invisible to the naked eye.

But in competitive matches even the smallest advantages can make the difference between victory and defeat. If consoles catch up in terms of FPS, PC gamers would at least lose one of their previous aces up their sleeves.
