I predict: these 6 MMOs will die in 2022
The new year is here and a number of new MMOs will appear in 2022. But there will also be some games for which 2022 will be the last year. MeinMMO editor Alexander Leitsch introduces you to 5 MMOs that, in his eyes, will not survive the new year.
How did this list come about? Last year I made a list of MMOs that could die in 2021. I followed the same principle this year.
Again and again it is said that certain MMOs are already dead, although hundreds or thousands of players are still playing on their servers. Such games are not included in this list.
Instead, I looked for MMOs that were struggling with serious problems and / or demonstrable loss of players. While that doesn’t automatically mean they’ll really be pulped this year, the odds are good. Every decision is justified by me. We determined the number of players on Steam using the Steamcharts website.

Crowfall

What kind of game is this? Crowfall is a new MMORPG released in 2021. It differs greatly from traditional games of the genre and instead of an open, persistent world, offers various campaigns.
These campaigns run for a certain period of time before they end. Players who took part take their earnings with them to the Eternal Kingdoms, a social empire that is primarily about housing, trade and exchanges between players.
Crowfall appeals to fans of PvP, because almost all campaigns rely on the fight between the players. It convinces with timeless graphics and a wide range of classes and playable races.

How is Crowfall doing right now? Crowfall got off to a weak start from the start. The game started with performance problems, a weak tutorial, an interface that took getting used to and a few other quirks. For the fans of the game it was also problematic that they had been playing an alpha / beta for years, which hardly differed from the release version.
Although we don’t know the current number of players, around 3,200 players were online at the same time at the time of release. Shortly after the start, however, the reading of the player numbers was deactivated, apparently due to negative headlines. A total of around 90,000 players are said to have bought a version of Crowfall by August 2021.
In December 2022, the MMORPG was about to end. The developers considered whether they should shut down the servers or just let the game run in maintenance mode.
Then, however, Crowfall was sold to another indie studio. However, some developers, including executive producer Gordon Walton, will continue to work on the game.
This is why I believe Crowfall will die in 2022: Crowfall is a PvP MMORPG and puts a correspondingly large focus on a solid player base. And it just doesn’t have that. Many backers are disappointed and show this openly in forums and in reddit. At the same time, there is almost no advertising for the game.
Even with a new studio, I don’t think Crowfall can turn things around. The name arouses too many negative associations for that. A few games have already made a comeback, including Final Fantasy XIV and ESO, but both had large studios and large series of games behind them.
For Crowfall, on the other hand, it looks rather bleak.
