Google accuses Apple of bullying Android users

Blue bubble envy is real and Google has just come out against Apple.

Google has accused Apple of having a deliberate strategy to harass and turn Android users into second-class citizens in the iMessage messaging service that we have on the iPhone, iPad and Mac. iMessage has exclusive functions such as Animoji or games, and also makes a difference between messages sent from one Apple device and those sent from other.

In the iPhone Messages app both iMessages and SMS are grouped together, and to differentiate them Apple dyes the former blue and the latter green. This is something that has been the case since the platform was presented, specifically in 2012. It is a quick way to know if you are sending a message by iMessage, always free, or by SMS, which can be paid in many places.

According to a recent report of The Wall Street JournalThis can lead to social anxiety among teens. The blue bubble has become status symbol among American teens, leading most young people to buy an iPhone rather than an Android. And both Google’s Android boss, Hiroshi Lockheimer, and the official Android account have spoken out against this differentiation.

“iMessage shouldn’t profit from harassment. Texting should bring us together, and the solution exists. Let’s fix this as an industry.”

A strategy in the spotlight

Although Apple’s intentions were good at the time, to differentiate its platform from the rest, it is possible that at the moment it can be a problem in certain user groups. Although it really has a difficult solution.

Perhaps in other countries it is not so important since other apps like WhatsApp are very popular, but in the United States many use iMessage and SMS.

iMessage vs SMS

IMessages appear in blue and SMS in green

Apple has to continue to differentiate messages sent via iMessage from SMS in some way, since both types of messages can be received in its app. Maybe the only simple solution to this situation is to launch an iMessage app for Android, so that there would no longer be possible differentiation and everyone could have the coveted blue bubbles.

Apple considered launching iMessage on Android years ago, however this is something that ended up being rejected. Perhaps this is a good time to return to the idea, Apple has many apps on Android, including one to locate AirTags.
