A cheap new graphics card from AMD is the hope of many desperate gamers – but it could disappoint

Graphics cards are a rare commodity and in most cases far too expensive. With the RX 6500 XT, AMD presented an inexpensive graphics card for less than 200 euros.

Graphics cards and PS5 consoles are currently a rare commodity and are either hardly available or you have to pay thousands of euros on eBay for a graphics card.

Which graphics card is it about? AMD presented some new products at CES 2022. The products also include the Radeon RX 6500 XT. This is officially the smallest graphics card from AMD’s RX-6000 series.

With a suggested retail price of $ 199, this is also the cheapest graphics card that AMD has announced to date. In Germany, the EIA with taxes is likely to be a little more than 200 euros.

But it’s not just because of the price that many gamers place their hopes on AMD’s new graphics card. Because with a small video memory you want to make the graphics card uninteresting for miners.

Small video memory should protect graphics card from high prices

Our colleagues from GameStar had already reported that AMD wants to protect the RX 6500 XT from extreme pricesby adding only 4 GB of video memory to the graphics card. This makes the graphics card of little interest to miners, as the VRAM is too tight. Still, many believe that 4 GB of video memory may not be enough for gaming in 2022.

In the best case scenario, this means for many gamers that at least the competition from the miner camp will disappear for them. Nevertheless, there are more than enough reasons why you as a gamer currently hardly have a chance to buy a graphics card.

What exactly is the problem? Now the online magazine PCGamer reported that the manufacturer Asus has announced the first prices for the RX 6500 XT (via PCGamer.com). And the prices are unlikely to please the fewest users:

• According to the manufacturer, the Asus TUF Gaming Radeon RX 6500 XT OC Edition will cost € 334.
• The cheaper variant, the Dual Radeon RX 6500 XT OC Edition, will start at a price of 299 euros.

The prices quoted are the manufacturer’s recommendations. We assume that the graphics cards at retailers such as Amazon, MediaMarkt or Alternate are likely to become a lot more expensive and that you would have to spend at least 400 euros for the graphics card.

And it is precisely this price that could disappoint many users. Because AMD had presented the RX 6500 XT as the successor to the RX 570 and GTX 1650. These are two popular and widely used graphics cards. And both graphics cards are a bit older: the RX 570 appeared in summer 2017, the GTX 1650 a little later in 2019.

AMD is not the only manufacturer that could offer inexpensive graphics cards. Other manufacturers also want to offer inexpensive graphics cards from 2022 and they could still offer some surprises.
