Vodafone, Telefónica and Orange against one of the new functions of iOS 15
The large European operators have signed to eliminate Private Relay, an iOS function to protect their users’ data.
iOS 15 brought with it one of the most important features in the entire Apple ecosystem. It is about Private Relay, and we have classified it as one of the 45 best tricks for iOS 15 and your iPhone. The function is designed so that no one has access to your browsing habits or the sites you visit, not even Apple herself.. Of course, this has not pleased the European operators at all, and several of them, including Vodafone, Telefónica and Orange, have started to sign a letter demanding that Private Relay be banned.
In fact, some reports and users claim that Private Relay has already been deactivated in some operators, eliminating the function of those iPhone devices that use them. The opposition of the European operators is based, supposedly, in that said function brings “significant consequences in terms of undermining European digital sovereignty“, and that also has an impact on”the operator’s ability to effectively manage telecommunications networks“.
An excerpt from The Telegraph tells us about the situation in which European operators find themselves I’ve been with Apple for a while, and the reason they want to remove Private Relay from iOS 15 features:
“Mobile operators have been caught in a power struggle with Apple after urging regulators to ban the iPhone maker’s encryption technology for claiming it will undermine” digital sovereignty. “Some of Europe’s biggest mobile operators want to that the European Commission prevents Apple from using Private Relay on the grounds that it will also prevent them from managing their networks. “
Something that draws a lot of attention is that VPN services essentially do the same thing as Private Relay on Apple devices. Of the services of this style the European operators had not put opposition until the moment. Now, however, that the Private Relay option is even more accessible to users and facilitates the protection of their data –since it is integrated into the operating system-, the operators have begun to raise their voices.

It is no secret to anyone that operators around the world profit from their users’ browsing data by selling them to third parties. for all kinds of purposes. Now, however, it is more complicated for them to obtain the data of the users of the apple, and it seems that they did not like this one hair. However, Private Relay comes exclusively for users who are part of Apple’s iCloud + service. This service allows you to unlock certain functions on Mac, iPhone and iPad.
It has also been detected that with Private Relay many of the blocks made by the operators to limit our telephone plans, compress images or restrict the reproduction of high definition content on our mobile phones are released. We will see what will eventually happen to the Private Relay function in Europe, but it seems that the interests of the operating companies have been shaken by the data protection capacity that users have on hand today.
