Microsoft stopped Xbox One production in 2021 to focus on Series X / S

Have you already got hold of an Xbox Series X – or grabbed a Series S? In any case, Microsoft has been concentrating on the current gen consoles for the whole of last year, as has now become known. Since the end of 2020 there has been no more production for the Xbox One.

production stopped

It’s all about this: Before Microsoft’s new consoles conquered the market in November 2020, Microsoft initially only initiated production of two One models: The Xbox One X and the digital version of the Xbox One S.

That is new: On the other hand, it was only now known that there was no longer any production for the other Xbox One consoles last year. So only the units that were in stock at the dealers and that were slowly being sold were available. Theverge.com quotes Cindy Walker, senior director of Xbox console product marketing, on the subject as follows:

In order to focus on the production of the Xbox Series X / S, we stopped production for all Xbox One consoles at the end of 2020.

Contrasting plan at Sony: On the other hand, we have only just learned that Sony will continue production of the PS4 in 2022. The reason for this is the persistent shortage of the PS5. The hardware manufacturer hopes that PlayStation fans who have not yet been able to get hold of a current console will still use the last generation.

After all, new cross gen titles like Horizon Forbidden West ensuring that the Last Gen remains attractive. At Microsoft, the situation is different, as the Series S is far more available than Series X or PS5. Fans who find it too cumbersome to keep an eye on sales time slots for the Series X and then strike it as quickly as possible can instead use the less powerful, but also significantly cheaper console.

What do you think of Microsoft’s decision and did you already suspect it or are you surprised?
