Phoenix Lübeck takes ex-VfB favorite Daniel Franziskus

Daniel Francis returns to the Hanseatic city. The former goalscorer and fan favorite at VfB Lübeck will be the new assistant coach at city rivals 1. FC Phönix Lübeck. The 30-year-old was introduced to the team on Saturday.

Oliver Zapel: “Daniel Franziskus is my preferred candidate”

The team around head coach Oliver Zapel will consist of assistant coaches Danny Cornelius and Franziskus, the LN athlete of the year 2018, and goalkeeping coach Andreas Minge. “Daniel is my preferred candidate and, thanks to his Lübeck past, is no stranger to the city,” said Zapel, adding: “Daniel fits into the constellation with Danny. They are two young and dynamic trainers who bring their own ideas to the table. I need.”

One hundred percent attitude and passion

Franziskus scored 14 goals in 27 games for VfB Lübeck (July 2018 to October 2019) before the former striker had to end his career prematurely as a result of a knee injury and worked as a scout for the Green-Whites. His first coaching position was at SV Grün-Weiß Firrel (Landesliga Weser-Ems). In December he informed the club that he was looking for a new challenge after two years. He has now found this among the eagles. “Daniel has gained initial experience in the coaching business and would now like to develop further. As an active player, he wants to contribute with one hundred percent attitude and passion. We believe that it goes well together – with Oliver Zapel and with a club that also wants to develop,” said sporting director Frank Salomon.

“I feel like accompanying the plans of Phönix Lübeck”

According to LN information, the B license holder also had inquiries from Kickers Emden and TuS Bersenbrück (each in the Lower Saxony Oberliga). “The concept presented to me sounds really cool. I feel like supporting Phönix Lübeck’s plans. I would also like to take the next step as a coach in the regional league. I had long conversations with Oliver Zapel. It appeals to me to learn a lot alongside an experienced football coach. He hands over a certain responsibility and exchanges ideas closely with his team. That’s very interesting,” said the native of Aurich. “Because I already know some guys from the team, it’s easier for me to arrive.”

Daniel Franziskus is looking for an apartment in Lübeck

Francis wants to take an apartment in Lübeck. During the VfB days he lived in the city. His wife Stefanie, daughter Emilia (16 months) and his two dogs Buddy and Jaycob are staying in his hometown of Victorbur (near Aurich) in the recently completed family home. “They have my wholeheartedly behind me and are happy that I get this chance. I’m proud to have such a family behind me,” said the 30-year-old. Zapel even sees the fact that his primary residence is in Lower Saxony as an advantage. “We’ll be playing against a lot of opponents from there in the future, so Daniel can combine scouting with a visit at home,” said Zapel.
