More cars will be able to be opened with the iPhone soon
CarKey support will be available in more cars starting this summer!
The conversations of Apple and Hyundai During 2021 they generated different rumors about the possibility of a partnership for the famous Apple Car, however, both companies were also working on a more short-term project. According to a report shared by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, various Hyundai car models will have CarKey function from this year.
The expansion of the function that allows unlocking cars thanks to the U1 chip in iPhone and Apple Watch selected, it will expand beyond the BMW models it was previously compatible with.

In his analysis, Gurman assures that the code findings several months ago in iOS 15, which the next cars to get support for the feature will be models from Hyundai and its Genesis lineup. The functionality will be implemented in the summer.
Gurman points out that this partnership between the two companies is “a bit different considering Apple and Hyundai’s public fight over Apple car production about a year ago”, when the manufacturers confirmed that they were in talks with those from Cupertino for an upcoming project.
With this project, Apple will finally make CarKey technology available to more users and will allow drivers to replace physical keys with their iPhones. Apple demonstrated during the WWDC 2020 keynote that it is possible to hold the iPhone close to the car door handle to unlock it with NFC technology, ensuring a process is secure, thanks to a unique token that is shared between the iPhone and the car.
Waiting for this release, there are some details to be confirmed. The Bloomberg report does not specify whether Hyundai will choose to make use of the ultra-wideband (UWB) technology in recent iPhones, which could allow owners to unlock their car without having to take the phone out of their pocket, or whether it will just use NFC.
