PS5 backwards compatibility: PS3 games in the store give a brief glimpse of hope

Many PS5 owners are still hoping that backwards compatibility will also be extended to PS3, PS2 and PS1 games.
Many PS5 owners are still hoping that backwards compatibility will also be extended to PS3, PS2 and PS1 games.

If you own a PS5, you can also play PS4 titles on it. But PS3, PS2 and PS1 games remain largely taboo. That could change at some point, but unfortunately the current excitement about some PS3 games in the store on the PS5 is probably for nothing. This is said to be just a bug and the games were probably already playable on the PS5 via PS Now anyway.

PS3 games appear on the PS5 store and inspire hope

That’s what it’s about: Some PS5 users have noticed that some PS3 games have appeared in the PS Store on the PS5. They even came with a price tag, which normally shouldn’t be the case – due to the PS5’s lack of backwards compatibility with the PS3. A few Dead or Alive titles and the Prince of Persia series were affected.

Notices of changes? This is of course particularly exciting in view of the current rumors about Sony’s new streaming or subscription service, which is said to combine PS Now and PS Plus and also bring extended backward compatibility for the PS5. It could be called Spartacus internally and because Sony is probably withdrawing PS Now credit cards from circulation, a launch could take place soon.

Do we owe this to the patent? These PS3 games on the PS5 store also tie in really well with a new Sony patent that has surfaced recently. In it, PS5 architect Mark Cerny addresses the backward compatibility issue. Apparently a way has now been found to make PS1, PS2 and PS3 titles playable on the PS5:

Sony patent could finally make PS1, PS2 and PS3 games possible on the PS5

But the PS3 games in the PS5 store are unfortunately just a bug

Happy too soon: No, the PS3 games or the displayed price are apparently not an indication that extended backward compatibility of the PS5 is already in the starting blocks. Even if it fits in well with the patent and the rumors at the right time, this is probably just a bug – and a known, old bug at that.

Visual bug already known: As has now been explained several times on the Internet, this display error has already occurred several times in the past. The price shown is from PS Now and is the amount that was due at the time if you wanted to rent the games. The Prince of Persia games aren’t new either, they used to be part of PS Now too.
