The Last of Us: One of Gaming’s Most Popular Voices Promotes NFT – Gets Brutal Reaction
Troy Baker is one of the most well-known and popular voice actors in gaming. He has been voicing characters in video games for over 15 years and has lent his voice to some of the biggest characters in gaming including Booker DeWitt from BioShock Infinite, Joel Miller in The Last of Us, Batman in the Telltale games and of course ” Jonesy” in Fortnite. Now he’s committed to NFT and feeling the anger of gamers.
Who is Troy Baker?
- Troy Baker (46) is an American voice actor and musician. He started his career doing radio commercials in Dallas, Texas before he started dubbing animes.
- From 2004 he was heard for the first time in video games, from 2008 he was repeatedly cast in games as one of the main characters. He voiced Conan in 2008’s Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures.
- He is now one of the most well-known and sought-after dubbing voices in gaming. He has voiced villains like Pagan Min in Far Cry, the Joker in Batman, but also great heroes like Joel Miller in “The Last of Us” or “Jonesy” in Fortnite. Baker holds the record for most acting nominations at the BAFTA Game Awards. He was nominated 5 times between 2013 and 2021. Alongside Nolan North, Baker is undoubtedly one of the top gaming voices.

What did Baker do? On Jan. 14, the voice actor tweeted that he had partnered with an NFT company. You’re looking for new tools to enable Création to do new things so that everyone has a chance to invest and own the brand they create.

What was the reaction to thatf? The reaction was pretty brutal. While Baker’s tweet received “only” 2,500 likes, comments critical of the statement received well over twice as many likes. One answer even received more than 6 times as many “likes”.
Such a situation, when a negative response tweet receives significantly more likes than the original tweet, is called a “ratio”. The situation is intended to express displeasure with a statement, because there are no “dislikes” on Twitter. It’s kind of a “boo”.
One comment got 10,000 likes: “Troy, it’s not about hate. NFTs are unethical. They have a big impact on the environment and they cause a massive shortage of computer chips and computer parts. Do you actually know how NFTs are generated? Have you dealt with it?
There were 16,000 likes for the comment: “Many people will come to you and give you lots of information as to why this is not good. I hope you’re the kind of man who seems like you want to be, and you listen to those voices, and you don’t just listen to the people who tell you what you want to hear. You’re one of the greats, but I won’t follow you here, sir.”
Other users announced that they would unfollow Baker. You respect him as a man and a talented voice actor, but the decision is just not right.
Still other users say NFTs are designed to “take money out of people’s pockets easily.” Basically they are just scams.
How does Baker react? In any case, the voice actor notices that he has overshot the mark with the provocative phrase “You can hate – or you can create”. He says he was just trying to lighten the debate and what clever things to say didn’t work.
He thanks the people for their input. Ultimately he is just a storyteller trying to tell his story to anyone who will listen. He wants to help others to do the same: sometimes it would work, sometimes it wouldn’t.
