Xbox game with 91 metascore is now free

This free gold title packs a punch.

Let’s face it, the quality of Xbox Games with Gold hasn’t necessarily increased since the rise of Game Pass. Microsoft’s focus is now clearly on the second subscription service and Gold’s monthly free games now seem like a relic that is still being retained.

Bright spot with retro flair: It’s all the more gratifying when we come across a small gold mine when digging through the current lineup. This is called Space Invaders Infinity Gene in January and stands up Metacritic with a score of 91 points.

Space Invaders Infinity Gene was released in 2009 and is one of those games that takes an absolute classic like Space Invaders and extends the well-known concept with lots of graphic effects and crazy ideas. Infinity Gene goes so far that actually only little is reminiscent of the original from 1978. Where the game initially looks like Space Invaders, as you play it evolves and becomes a space shooter à la Ikaruga or Galaga.

Modern classic: In addition to various spaceships, you also have various weapons at your disposal. With the huge number of opponents on the screen, it is imperative that you make the right choice here. Then it’s time to shoot like crazy and collect combo points. If you like shmups or games like Rez, you’ll definitely get your money’s worth in this arcade revival.

These games are still available with gold in January

Of course you can play more games for free on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S this month. If you weren’t fast enough, you’ve already missed the first title with Radiant Silvergun, because it was replaced by the survival RPG Aground, which is available until February 15, and Space Invaders Infinity Gene. The twin-stick shooter Neurovoider is also available throughout January.
