Do you need PS Plus to play CoD: Warzone on PS4 and PS5?

How free is the free-to-play “Battle Royale” Call of Duty: Warzone on the PlayStation? Is PS Plus required to play on PS4 and PS5? Might it bring any benefits? MeinMMO explains.

No, you do not need an active PS Plus subscription to play Call of Duty: Warzone online on PS4 and PS5. However, you cannot download the Battle Royale for free. Without PS Plus, Warzone costs 25 cents.

What is Warzone? With the free shooter, Call of Duty dares the second attempt in the “Battle Royale” business. Warzone relies on big battles with up to 150 players and whoever is left at the end sacks the victory.

As the playing field gets smaller and smaller over time, players are bound to end up clashing in an exciting showdown.

By the way: There is currently no PS5 version for the Battle Royale Warzone.

PS Plus not necessary – but €0.25

However, Warzone is not completely free without PS Plus. Since the fast shooter is only released from the age of 18, PlayStation requires a small fee of 25 cents for the game. This allows proof of age to be carried out in the PlayStation Store.

You must therefore provide information from your identity card when purchasing. This takes a few minutes. But together with the 25 cents, it’s the only effort you have to make to play the Warzone for free.

The official PS blog entry states:

Warzone will be available from March 10th at 4pm (GMT) for owners of the full version of Modern Warfare and can be downloaded free of charge by PS Plus members from 8pm (GMT).

Call of Duty: Warzone is 25 cents for non-PS Plus members. (For non-PS Plus members in Germany, an age verification fee of 25 cents applies.)

PS Plus brings you free cosmetics every season

What’s it all about? When it comes to gameplay, you will not be at a disadvantage compared to players on other platforms or members of PS Plus.

However, subscription owners of PS Plus get a package with exclusive cosmetics in each season. This is what the package of the joint Season 4 with Cold War looked like:

An operator skin, a weapon blueprint and a few small cosmetics are common. However, if you do not have the right CoD premium title for the operator skin, you cannot use the skin in Warzone – despite PS Plus.

There aren’t many free titles on the PlayStation that will let you onto the online servers without a PS Plus. Warzone is a refreshing exception and dispenses with the compulsion.
