The next MMORPG 2022 dies – Mu Origin closes the servers

And again a MMORPG closes the servers in 2022. This time it was the mobile MMO Mu Origin that got it, which is already no longer available for download. We at MeinMMO summarize.

When does the game close? Publisher Webzen has announced in a short statement on their website that the mobile MMORPG Mu Origin has unfortunately had to close. Just one day after the announcement on January 17th, the game disappeared from the app stores on January 18th.

As of now, you can no longer download Mu Origin or buy things in the title’s real-money shop. However, if you have installed the game, you can still play it.

The game servers will then close on March 31st, which is about two months from now. From this point on, fans who are still playing will also be kicked out of the game. Webzen has not yet given an exact time for this.

2022 already has 2 MMORPGs on its conscience – one of them is now dying for the 2nd time

Why is Mu Origin closing? The publisher Webzen has not yet given an exact reason why the game, which is more than 5 years old, has to be closed. But it is conceivable that they want to bring the already released successor Mu Origin 2 further forward.

Switching off the predecessor would then make sense. It would also be acceptable that Mu Origin has lost so many players through the second part that running the original is no longer worthwhile. But both are just speculations, since we don’t have any player numbers or anything like that.

The publisher only writes the following words: “We have been traveling the Mu continent with you for over 5 years. It is with sadness that we must now announce that our long journey with Mu Origin must come to an end.

We have tried our best to create a nicer gaming environment for you, but we have found that we cannot continue this service. We are very sad but have had to make the decision to close the Mu Origin servers.

Also, it should be noted that there will be no refunds.”

The community is not surprised

What is the mood? Mu Origin didn’t have a very large community anymore. The players, who are still actively exchanging ideas in the forums and on reddit, are not surprised by the server shutdown.

Many of them have already switched to Mu Origin 2 or have completely turned their backs on the game. A few fans seem to want to run a private server, but this posting only got 7 upvotes on reddit.

What are the players saying? in one reddit-Thread There is a discussion about shutting down the servers, but nobody is really surprised. On the contrary, one even wonders why it is only happening now.

  • User ProfessorMeatbag writes: “I can’t say I’m surprised. But that’s kind of fraudulent. After all, they just started a cash grab event a week ago. No matter how much you love or hate a game, a full shutdown always sucks for the people who put the time and money into it.”
  • Imaginos_in_disguise says: “If anyone ever decided to spend money or time on this game, it’s their own fault. It’s never been really good.”
  • UndisputedTankhard is annoyed: “I don’t really care, but it sucks that Webzen closes another game. I still wish I could still play Archlord – not just on private servers.”

What was that game?

Mu Origin was the first mobile offshoot of the Mu universe, which has already released several games. Including Mu, Mu Legend, Mu Archangel and Mu Origin 2.

These MMORPGs are all roughly based on the same, rather grindy gameplay from the iso perspective. In Asia, the games can achieve moderate success and things are not looking particularly rosy for the MMORPGs in the West either.

During Mu Origin 2 im Google Play-Store With a score of 4.2/5 from over 67,000 reviews, Mu Legend gets only even reviews on Steam and manages to be loud Steamcharts, down to 47 players in the 24-hour peak.

What do you think of another MMORPG killing in 2022, even if it’s “just” a mobile MMORPG? Have you already played any of the Mu games or are you even affected by the Mu Origin server shutdown? Write it to us in the comments here at MeinMMO.

Incidentally, Mu Origin was not one of the 6 MMOs that MeinMMO editor Alexander Leitsch predicts will die in 2022.
