With the tenth annual survey of the Game Developers Conference prior to the event, check out all the development studios where the interest of the video game industry is going. In addition to many exciting topics such as toxicity in the workplace and the status of the current generation of consoles, one particular point has almost caused unanimity among developers: NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens), “non-interchangeable tokens” that act like a kind of title deed for digital goods works.

Survey on NFTs and Cryptocurrencies

One of the questions revolves around the topic of NFTs and cryptocurrencies. The experts from the development industry were asked to what extent the development studio is interested in installing cryptocurrencies as a means of payment or NFTs in general in their games.

What did the poll reveal? Around 70 percent of development studios are not interested in NFTs. When it comes to cryptocurrency, 72 percent are disinterested. 21 percent each said they had some interest in the two technologies, while 6 percent and 7 percent said they were very interested.

Around 1 percent already use cryptocurrency or are currently developing NFTs for their games. But all in all, the majority of developer studios are currently not interested in cryptocurrencies or NFTs.

GameStop is one of the few companies interested in the topic:

reasons for disinterest

Those who advocated cryptocurrencies and NFTs believe these technologies are the future. However, there are also enough skeptics who bring numerous arguments against the two technologies.

What are the counterarguments? Some developers believe that public demand is not high enough for cryptocurrencies and NFTs to take off. It’s just a small audience interested in currencies.

In addition, these technologies are not sustainable enough and are an easy target for “money laundering”, as one developer stated in the survey:

As a developer, I’m deeply uncomfortable that there’s a push in this direction. It feels like it’s only fueled by the greed for more money because we read stories about crypto millionaires, when in reality everything is extremely unstable and unethical.

Some developers are even calling for a boycott of the two technologies. Even professionals working in NFT companies advise avoiding NFTs. Others even predict they will drive a wedge into “the heart of the industry.”
