What is the maximum amount of money you can have in GTA Online?

Money plays an important role in GTA Online. But what is the maximum amount of money you can have in GTA Online? Is there a limit and if so, why?

What is it about? Everyone wants to make big money in GTA Online. The streets of Los Santos give you plenty of options. Small money is made by robbing stores. The big bucks come from completing Heists. You can quickly get a few million into your account. But is there a limit? Will GTA ever say “Sorry, this far and no further”?

Yes. GTA Online has a money limit per player. And that’s just over GTA$2.1 billion in cash. But why is there a limit and why does it have to be such a crooked number? And what is the maximum assets in the account?

The maximum cash you can own in GTA Online is ~$2.1 billion, why?

That’s the exact limit: You can carry a maximum of GTA$2,147,483,647 in GTA Online and Offline.

Converted into shark cards (GTA dollars bought with real money), you would have to buy about 268 of the Megalodon cards, which bring 8 million GTA dollars per card.

A ticket normally costs €75. So it would be over €20,100 due if you want to buy your way to the cash limit. However, this does not work as the amount of Shark Cards is credited directly to your in-game account and you do not receive it as cash.

Why is there a limit? This number looks pretty random, but it’s not. This is because it is the highest positive value for a system using 32-bit integers.

What is the total limit? That’s not entirely clear. A YouTube video shows a modder who pocketed more and more money and then got stuck at a total of GTA$32,652,609,400. So cash and money in the account.

However, there is no solid reason why this number should be the limit. The video was uploaded by Skippy Kane in 2016 (via YouTube.com)

Whether the limit is lower if you earn the money legally is unclear.

Have players achieved this yet? A player with a normal playing style will not reach the cap of over 32 billion GTA dollars so quickly. It would take years of grinding for many hours a day to do that.

In 2019, GTA YouTuber “The Professional” calculated that a player who grinds 24 hours a day could make about $4.8 billion a year (via YouTube.com). No sleep, no food, no other activity during the day.

With new content such as the Cayo Perico heist, the power of earnings should have grown even further in the meantime. Still, it’s a far, if not impossible, goal for “normal” players.

What happens when you have the maximum money? Players are reporting that exceeding the cash limit will result in an in-game error. The modder from the YouTube video just couldn’t get any more money, the game didn’t change his account balance any further.
