Tomorrow 2 new MMORPGs celebrate their release – for whom are they interesting?

On January 25th, two new MMORPGs will be released that could hardly be more different. MeinMMO editor Alexander Leitsch tells you what makes the two games special and for whom they are interesting.

What are these MMORPGs? The two new games come from indie studios, but both already have a successful title on the market that acts as a kind of predecessor:

  • With Broken Ranks an interesting MMORPG appears in the iso perspective (“obliquely from above”). It relies on turn-based combat and focuses primarily on PvE. PvP content is only available in specific areas. The predecessor here is Taern, also an MMO with turn-based combat.
  • Mortal Online 2, on the other hand, is a first-person MMORPG with a focus on PvP. Here there are regular duels with other players in the open world. If you die, you also lose your entire inventory and equipped equipment. The predecessor here is Mortal Online 1.

In the following we tell you which features the two games offer and for which types of players they are interesting.

Broken Ranks – The MMORPG for tactics fans

What is the game? Broken Ranks is a Free2Play MMORPG that you can download from the game’s official website. A version on Steam is currently not planned. It is played in iso perspective, similar to Lost Ark, but the game world is 2.5D and looks more like a painting without much visible depth.

The great feature of the game is the turn-based combat system:

  • Whenever you encounter a monster in the open world, you will be taken to a separate battle screen.
  • There you can choose your skills and the type of defense within 10 seconds.
  • You have a total of 12 action points available, which you can divide into 5 abilities and 3 types of defense (melee, ranged, magic). You can put up to five points in each ability.
  • After the 10 seconds, the actions are then carried out. Theoretically, your character can use up to five abilities in a round, as long as you have invested at least one action point in each ability.

You represent a class that you chose when creating your character. You can choose from archers, druids, knights and fire mages, among others. With the Voodoo there is also a rather unique class that relies on spiritual magic and “mental attacks”.

In terms of content, the game offers you:

The game is being developed by a Polish indie studio and you can see the first gameplay from the beta in this video by YouTuber MadMaster:

Who is it interesting for? Broken Ranks is a dark game with its own unique setting. The iso perspective and the turn-based combat system are very special and will not appeal to everyone. But it is precisely this content that makes the MMORPG so interesting at the same time.

Because in every fight there are strategic decisions for attack and defense. They become even more important when you start in group content. Broken Ranks will probably have a niche existence because of this content, but if you fancy a rather unusual game, you should at least give the MMORPG a chance.

Since it’s Free2Play, you have nothing to lose except a little time.

When does it start exactly? Broken Ranks opens its servers on January 25th at 17:00 GMT.

The game is already in preload and you can download the client for free.

Mortal Online 2 – The MMORPG for PvP fans who don’t like iso perspective

What is the game? Mortal Online 2 is a sandbox MMORPG with a subscription model and a strong focus on PvP. You can go out and explore the world, build a house and even create your own empire. However, there is always the danger that other players will kill you.

If you die, you will lose all your equipment because there is full loot in the game. However, the equipment does not play such a big role, but the personal skill is in the foreground, similar to Albion Online. Anyone who also kills players without being asked will be labeled as a murderer. This also has disadvantages, because at a certain point the guards of cities will attack you.

A highlight of the MMORPG is the action-combat system, which is reminiscent of For Honor. You also determine the direction of an attack or a block. If an attack comes from the right and you block on the left, the blow will still hit you with full force. This requires a lot of practice.

Mortal Online 2 offers you the following content:

  • Melee and ranged combat and fighting on horseback
  • An in-depth crafting system
  • Free trade between players
  • A completely open game world

The game also convinces with its pretty graphics and claims to be “particularly immersive”. That’s why it also uses the first-person perspective.

Who is it interesting for? Mortal Online 2 is aimed at players who enjoy sandbox and PvP. Anyone who gets involved in the game, can get involved in a guild and also enjoys theorycrafting should take a look at the PvP MMORPG. Because it offers a good combat system, solid graphics and a number of mechanics that go very deep.

However, the game is not for fans of classic MMORPGs with a heroic story, linear quests and dungeons. Because none of that exists in Mortal Online 2.

The payment system, which is based on a buy2play model including a subscription, is also difficult. A big hurdle that only a few players will probably jump over. But they could form a close and strong community.

When does it start exactly? Mortal Online 2 celebrates its release on January 25th at 14:00 German time.

You can theoretically get started now, since the MMORPG is already in Early Access. I’ve already tried it out in the beta and wrote a test report:

I’ve been playing MMORPGs for 15 years: I’ve never died in Mortal Online 2 as many times as I have
