What is HEVC, why you should select it while recording video in your smartphone

Some smartphones also refer to this mode as Space Saving Mode. So, what is this new HEVC format and how does it help in saving space and does it affect the quality of the video as compared to other formats. Let’s know.

What is HEVC or High Efficiency Codec Video
HEVC is a new international standard for video compression, co-developed by ISO/IEC MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group) and ITU-T VCEG (Video Coding Experts Group). The codec is also called H.265.

Simply put, HEVC is a new video recording format for compression video that meets all the basic needs of a compressed video, can be transmitted or shared or stored as a file on local storage. It can also be streamed or broadcast over the Internet.

Another important thing to understand about this new video compression format is that despite the fact that it has higher compression than the regular H.264 or AVC codecs, it does not compromise on the quality of the video. But to achieve this, HEVC format requires more resources than other formats.

HEVC is now a widely accepted and supported file format. Most of the latest smartphones including mid-range and budget phones support this format, but, the reason why you should choose to record videos in this format is that it takes up less storage without compromising on the quality of the video.

The smaller video file size and better compression also mean that it will be much easier to store and transfer or even stream than other formats. So, if you are looking to share some videos, HEVC videos will be much easier to transfer and will take less data to transfer.

does it work on all devices
Well, this is where things get a bit complicated with this file format. While it is high on compression, it is definitely low on compatibility. While smartphones that support HEVC recording will be able to play videos without any problems, however, there are devices that do not support this file format.
