Why did Apple decide not to release the iPhone 9?

The iPhone 9 never existed and we do not know the official reasons why this happened, however there are various theories on the subject.

Apple’s strategy with iPhone names in recent years is almost as chaotic as that of colors. Traditionally, after a version with a number we had a version with the letter “S”, however that did not happen with the jump from iPhone 7 to 8, and, by the way, left the “iPhone 9” completely gone.

It’s not just that Apple didn’t introduce an iPhone 7s, it introduced two models and named them iPhone 8 and iPhone X, no trace of the iPhone 9. A name that was not used in the next generation either, in which we jumped to the iPhone XS and iPhone XR. So we thought that it is that Apple had decided to leave the numbers behind, but then they presented the iPhone 11, 12 and 13.

But, Why didn’t Apple release the iPhone 9?Did Apple not like the number? Was it marketing? Superstition? This is what is known.

Why didn’t the iPhone 9 come out?

Apple has not made any statement as to why. skipped iPhone 9. However, there is some speculation trying to explain why this happened.

1. It was the 10th anniversary of the iPhone

This would explain why the iPhone X was called that (read iPhone ten, not iPhone ‘x’), and not iPhone 9. The iPhone X was borrowed in 2017, 10 years after the launch of the original iPhone in 2007.

would ring a little strange that Apple used the iPhone 9 to separate two iPhones that are 10 years apart. This number mismatch could cause even more confusion, so skipping the iPhone 9 made sense.

2. Show it was an important update

Calling it the iPhone X, and numbering it with an “X” instead of a number, gave it more importance to the model as a device that meant a change, a before and after in the iPhone range.

The iPhone X introduced a new format, with a large screen, without frames, with Face ID and without Touch ID and with an OLED screen. Is the biggest change the iPhone has ever experienced, and calling it iPhone 9 could have been too continuous.

3. Puro marketing

Another theory says that it was simply marketing. Apple released the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, which could just as well have been called the iPhone 9. However, from a consumer point of view, it would appear that the devices belonged to three different categorieswhen it was not the case.

Apple wanted to differentiate its three models launched that year into two series, and the way to do it was to leave a number in the middle, the iPhone 9 that was never released.

4. Superstition

The Japanese associate 9 with a bad omen, so many people speculate that Apple skipped this number for that very reason, the iPhone is very popular in Japan. But nevertheless, after the presentation of the iPhone 13, it seems that this theory is totally ruled out. This is not something that concerns Apple.

5 reasons to use an iPhone (or smartphone) without a case

The truth is we will never know for sure the reason that led Apple to skip the iPhone 9, just as we don’t know why he hasn’t used the letter “s” for several years. They will have their reasons, but they have not wanted to share them.
