Will WhatsApp be banned in Europe? The ultimatum ends March 2022
WhatsApp has until March 2022 to inform the European Commission of its privacy policies if it does not want action to be taken.
The European Commission revealed this week who have sent a letter to WhatsApp requesting clarifications about changes you made to your terms and conditions of service and privacy policy in 2021. In case you don’t remember, almost a year ago WhatsApp made the controversial decision to change its policy allowing WhatsApp user data was shared with Facebook data.
The EU’s European Consumer Organization and the European Commission want WhatsApp to clearly explain how it complies with European Union data law, and whether “sufficiently clear information is provided to consumers” about the consequences of accepting or rejecting the new terms of service and conditions of use.
What does Europe require from WhatsApp to continue operating?
“WhatsApp must make sure users understand what they agree to and how your personal data is used, in particular when shared with business partners”. This is the main request of the European Commission to WhatsApp, something that the app does not yet do and that should start to appear in the app in a clear way.
In the letter, the European entities ask WhatsApp to clarify certain points important of its terms and conditions:
- How WhatsApp ensures that consumers can understand the consequences of accepting the updated terms of service.
- How WhatsApp uses consumers’ personal data for business purposes and whether consumers understand that WhatsApp shares this data with other Facebook/Meta companies or third parties.
- How WhatsApp ensures consumers can opt out of new terms of service, especially as persistent in-app notifications prompt consumers to accept respective changes.
- What action does WhatsApp plan to take with respect to those consumers who have already accepted the updated terms of service under the false presumption that this was necessary in order to continue using the application?
whatsapp has until March 2022 to respond to the request for information. And based on the WhatsApp response, the CPC Network with the support of the European Commission will assess whether WhatsApp has taken the appropriate measures so that their conduct fully complies with the consumer protection legislation of the European Union.
In case WhatsApp does not meet these requirements, we do not know to what extent the European Commission could block its use in the old continent. The protection of user privacy has always been an important issue, and Europe has never wavered in these matters when making decisions.
