Gothic stole my youth – now it’s coming as an MMO and that’s the end of me

The legendary role-playing game Gothic is now a real MMO – just not officially. Fans have added a multiplayer mode to the world and game. And MeinMMO editor Benedict Grothaus now fears for his free time.

If you don’t know Gothic: the game from the German studio Piranha Bytes is considered one of the most popular role-playing games, at least in Germany. As a nameless hero you complete tasks, fight against gods and dragons. Summarizing the entire story would go beyond the scope here.

The game was particularly popular for its simple but exciting combat system, the many options and storylines, and the role-playing aspect. You can fully immerse yourself in the role of hero – or simply blow out the lights on anyone who annoys you.

For me Gothic is a piece of childhood and youth. The first part was published in 2001, the second in 2002. I was already a nerd back then and I was totally absorbed in the games – and for the first time I was even able to talk to friends about the hobby. We all put dozens of hours into the games.

Together with Ragnarok Online and a little later World of Warcraft from 2004, Gothic shaped a good part of my early gaming time. The appearance of the medieval band In Extremo in the first part even contributed significantly to my current taste in music. Gothic is one of the few games that I’ve played through multiple times just to see all the possible choices.

Now a group of fans has started a project to turn Gothic into an MMO. Gothic Online: Untold Chapters is the name of the implementation and even has own website. In a new trailer, the team shows exactly what the project is all about:

Gothic as an MMO – And I will have no more life

Untold Chapters is based on the 2003 expansion of Gothic 2: The Night of the Raven, but brings in content from both Gothic 1 and Part 2. The magical barrier still stands and the prisoners there still mine for ore.

The fans’ MMO implementation relies more on role-playing than on looting and leveling. Similar to the RP servers of GTA V Online, you play a role and interact with other players. Everyone has their own personality and fulfills their task in the world.

However, if you want to become “more important”, for example to become a magician or paladin, you should probably invest several months in the game and work through everything. It’s all playable, one Instructions for installation is available on the official website.

I myself don’t quite trust the project yet. Less because it doesn’t sound like the original Gothic and more because I’d probably spend too much time there. I love Gothic and this MMO idea sounds great.

I’ve been working on my role for years in other RP projects. But if I can do it again – I have no idea. Especially since 2022 will not be stingy with good games. Let’s see if Untold Chapters can grab me – or if all the new releases like Nightingale will grab me too much:

New survival game in a unique setting is coming – should primarily rely on co-op, teamwork and PvE
