Hackers are now using this trick to hack your computer

Windows Clint Malware: Lazarus Cybercrime Group has managed to alter the Windows Update client for allegedly spreading malware. According to a report by cyber security researchers at Malwarebytes, the group is distributing virus-containing files to job seekers. According to a blog post shared by the researchers, they came to know about the malware when they were investigating a phishing campaign that was impersonating US-based firm Lockheed Martin.

The report further states that the group was targeting users who had applied for jobs in the company. Lazarus distributed two files Lockheed_Martin_JobOpportunities.docx and Salary_Lockheed_Martin_job_opportunities_confidential.doc. Both files contained malicious macros that, when activated, skipped files in the endpoint’s startup folder and the Windows / System32 folder.

The .ink file in the Windows subfolder then launches the Windows Update client which triggers the malicious DLL (Dynamic Link Library). It is worth noting that these DLLs can also bypass antivirus and other security measures. This is not the first time someone has used the Windows Update client to spread malware. A similar flaw was detected in October 2020 by MDSec researcher David Middlehurst. This time with Lazarus getting involved, the risk seems too great.

For those who don’t know, Lazarus is a notorious cybercrime group that was also involved in the WannaCry ransomware attack. The infamous group also attacked Sony when the company released a comedy film based on the fictional North Korea. Microsoft has not yet issued any official statement on this incident. To stay safe from this type of malware, you should also be extra careful when downloading or opening any files attached to mail.
