What the Bungie Purchase Really Means for Sony and PS5 Gamers

Shortly after the biggest gaming deal in history, Sony suddenly countered and bought Bungie, the developer of Destiny 2. It’s not just about the studio, but also the expertise behind it. We talk about what this deal means in the MeinMMO podcast.

This is the topic: On January 31, Sony announced that it would buy the Bungie development studio for a whopping 3.2 billion euros. Bungie are best known for their work on Destiny 2.

The deal comes just days after Microsoft announced it was acquiring Activision Blizzard. We have also analyzed the Blizzard purchase in the podcast. Many now see a counterattack in the purchase of Sony. However, this is only half true.

Interestingly, before becoming self-employed, Bungie worked as a studio at Activision Blizzard – and before that directly at Microsoft. There is a certain irony to the whole story.

In the current episode, Schuhmann, Alex and guest Benedict Grothaus, our survival expert at MeinMMO, pick the deal apart for you. In the podcast we address some open questions on the topic, such as:

  • What exactly is behind the purchase?
  • What are Sony’s plans with it?
  • Does Sony want to rebuild its lead in front of Microsoft or are there other goals?
  • What does the purchase mean for gaming and gamers?

Even if there is a little mockery about the purchase from some corners of the Internet, Destiny fans in particular are happy. For them, the purchase means that their favorite game will soon finally get better support and more content after a long period of drought.

Next up for Destiny 2 is The Witch Queen expansion. The addon will be released on February 22, 2022.
