The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 (or whatever it’s called) looks very promising in the early trailers. On the occasion of the postponement of the Nintendo blockbuster, the technology experts at Digital Foundry looked at the video material again. They express doubts as to whether the trailers actually come from the switch and think aloud about whether Zelda BotW 2 might not also appear on a successor console aka Switch Pro.

Image quality too good: In her weekly Digital Foundry Podcast the technology experts talk about Zelda BotW 2 and its postponement. They are amazed at the high picture quality from the last trailer and speculate what it could be all about. Among other things, they bring the idea into play that we could expect a cross-gen release.

But the best thing to do is watch the current shift trailer again here:

BotW2 trailer suspiciously pretty: It might not be obvious at first glance, but the image quality of the footage from Zelda BotW 2 looks surprisingly good. The resolution seems to be well above 720p, the clouds could be volumetric and even after cuts there are no visible problems like they can still happen even on the Xbox Series X.

It could be because: There are a whole lot of possibilities that could explain the look of the trailer. It’s possible that the video footage was simply recorded on a PC and is a pre-rendered trailer – although Nintendo isn’t actually known for getting caught up in graphics downgrade debates, quite the contrary. The games often look even better than shown in the trailers:

Not on the Switch? Another possible explanation would be that the video material shown here is footage that came from a Nintendo Switch successor, i.e. a Switch Pro, Switch 2 or whatever the console could be called. It is possible that Breath of the Wild 2 will appear crossgen like its predecessor (BotW was also launched for the Wii U), i.e. for the “old” and for the new Switch. On the new one it could look like the trailer.

More Zelda News:

But beware! Due to the postponed BotW 2 release, it seems a little more likely that the next big Zelda title will be close to a new Nintendo console. But Nintendo itself has stated multiple times that it doesn’t plan to replace the Switch anytime soon because it’s still selling phenomenally well. She still has five years ahead of her.

What do you think: will Zelda BotW 2 still be released for the normal switch? Or is this really a Switch Pro?
