Elden Ring: We can save an NPC’s life with a compliment

An NPC can be saved by kind words.

An NPC can be saved by kind words.

You think the world of Elden Ring is just cruel and mean? Well, that’s true for large parts of the journey through the intermediate country. But at least there are a few bright spots, such as an NPC that we can save from a sad fate – and only with kind words. We’ll tell you how it’s done.

Spoiler alert: This article contains spoilers for the outcome of an NPC quest.

The NPC quest line

It’s all about this: Right in the starting area, Limgrave, we meet Boc for the first time, who was turned into a tree by unfortunate circumstances. If we free him from this form, his true form shows up: Boc is a demi-human, but a bit more civilized than his other fellows, who attack us screeching.

In the course of his quest, Boc follows in the footsteps of his beloved mother and becomes a tailor just like her. He is loyal to us and can make changes to armor. During a conversation in Leyndell, he states that he thinks he is ugly in his ape-like form and that he would like to be reincarnated with a more appropriate appearance.

Rennala grants us rebirth - and with the larval tear, she grants it to Boc as well.

Rennala grants us rebirth – and with the larval tear, she grants it to Boc as well.

The obvious solution: Most players who play without guides will fulfill this wish by bringing Boc a larva tear, which he can use to experience reincarnation from Rennala – just like us when we want to rebalance our stats or change our appearance.

It’s like this with wishes: As so often in FromSoftware games, when we try to grant a wish to an NPC, it doesn’t end well. With the larval tear, Boc is reborn as a young man.

But he doesn’t answer when we talk to him and as soon as we reload the area he’s just dead. This makes poor Boc one of those characters whose lives we destroy when we try to help – but only when we do the obvious choose way.

Save Boc with a compliment

Instead of bluntly complying with Boc’s request and giving him a different look, we can sort of suggest that this isn’t necessary at all.

To do this, we “just” have to tell him that he’s beautiful. It’s actually not difficult to do, but you just have to figure it out first.

Here is the hermit village.

Here is the hermit village.

Here’s how to find the item you need: You may have discovered the talker who says “You’re beautiful” by accident and used it to boost the self-confidence of your co-op partners. If not: You can find the item in the hermit village in gelmirnortheast of Grace artisan hut. It is on a demihuman corpse on a flight of stairs in front of a boarded up door.

To convince Boc that he’s beautiful and doesn’t need a rebirth, just use the head in front of him and then choose the dialogue option that addresses that. Do you need a little more help to find all the steps of the quest? This video will help you further:

Subtle hints

Of course, FromSoftware has again hidden a lot of clues to the solution of the quest in the game. Here’s how the description of Rennala’s Greater Rune gives us a hint that reincarnating with her might not be a good idea (don’t worry – it doesn’t concern you):

Children reincarnated by Rennala are weak and often do not live long. Faulty creatures, all together.

As far as the speech head is concerned, tips are also hidden. The hermit village where we find the talking head is inhabited by demi-humans. We find the item itself on a corpse and in the item description we read:

Unconditional Love. Sincere encouragement. This can only be a mother’s voice.

Boc talks a lot about his mother and recognizes her voice when we use the talking head. On the other hand, the clues that lead us to the sad end with Boc’s death are much clearer, since he talks directly to us about Rennala.
