Apple releases new firmware for AirTags

offer

Apple recently rolled out new firmware for the AirTags. The version is called 1A301 and replaces build number 1A291.

As MacRumors reported that some AirTags users recently received firmware update 1A301 for their trackers. It is unclear whether the update offers new functions or just fixes bugs, because Apple has not yet published any release notes.

Firmware update currently only available for a small proportion of users

As usual, the update for the AirTags will be distributed via OTA (Over The Air). In order for the update to reach the Apple trackers safely, they should be close to an iPhone. However, the firmware update cannot be forced.

Apple also relies on a staggered distribution when updating the AirTag firmware. According to information from MacRumors only one percent of all users are said to have already received the update. Ten percent should get it on May 3rd and another 25 percent on May 9th. The update should finally be available to all AirTag owners on May 13th.

The staggered release allows Apple to ensure the firmware update is working smoothly before rolling it out to all users. Apple follows a similar approach when distributing automatic iOS updates. In contrast to the AirTags, however, a software update can be triggered manually on the iPhone.
