Tom Nook makes life difficult for us in Animal Crossing. The nasty capitalist rips us off (even if he says he’s donating the money) and maybe he’s up to even more sinister things. According to one fan theory, Tom Nook may actually not be who he says he is. Perhaps there is simply a person hiding behind the cute facade.

Animal Crossing fans have mistaken Tom Nook for a human in a tanuki suit, but that’s unlikely

That’s what it’s about: According to a fan theory, Tom Nook is not supposed to be a Tanuki, but a human. Although Tom Nook looks like a raccoon, he is officially a tanuki, also known as Japanese raccoon dogs. The animals are an integral part of Japanese mythology and a popular mythical figure. Among other things, they can transform and traditionally have very large testicles that serve as good luck charms and tools (yes, really).

How do you get that? The fact that Tom Nook is allegedly not a tanuki at all, but only wears a corresponding disguise, is mainly based on a statement by the axolotl Samselt aka Shrunk Animal Crossing: Wild World return. There the psychologist and comedian explains that we all wear masks. Even Tom Nook, although he would actually wear a full raccoon suit.

Of course that makes you suspicious. Actually, the statement about masks should be meant metaphorically, but the fact that Tom Nook is mentioned here again and the whole thing is explained so far comes as a surprise. To stay with the picture: Why should Tom Nook not only wear a mask but a whole suit if there is nothing more behind it?

More on Animal Crossing:

Much speaks against it: Aside from the statement being arguably a metaphor, there’s simply no reason within the Animal Crossing world for Tom Nook to put on such a show. Some characters like Sina have known him for a very long time and nothing similar is mentioned anywhere else. At the moment, everything is actually suggesting that Tom Nook is actually an animal. Of course, the idea is still amusing (via: Screenrant).

What do you say to that? Do you also have a strange feeling about Tom Nook?
