Greedy Cabal Emperor or Crazy AI? – This is how the story in Destiny 2 could continue in Season 17

Greedy Cabal Emperor or Crazy AI? – This is how the story in Destiny 2 could continue in Season 17

Season 16 has been running in Destiny 2 since February 22nd and most players have completed the Savathun campaign and the seasonal story in the last few weeks. It is therefore unlikely that Bungie will continue the main story in full next season. Instead, the lore has indicated that two old acquaintances have much more potential to return in Season 17. MeinMMO tells you who that is and why.

It is undisputed that there will also be story content in Destiny 2 in the coming Season 17. The story about the darkness, the witnesses and Savathun is exciting and has not yet been told to the end. Additionally, the lore has since opened up a few new narrative threads that Bungie could easily pick up next season before Savathun gets back to business.

  • For one, the lore and Ana Bray provided clues to Rasputin, the Warmind.
  • And the seasonal storyline featuring Caiatl’s Cabal revealed some new information about Calus and his current status as well as the Leviathan in the Vox Obscura exo mission.

Theory 1: The Warmind Rasputin returns in Season 17

The Season 16 Sparrow “Archangel Zeal” with lore text.

Who is Rasputin? In Destiny 2, Rasputin is the most powerful military intelligence ever developed. Its creator is the Braytech group and its boss Clovis Bray. The Warmind’s monitoring program was the first to detect the arrival of darkness in the solar system.

Rasputin also has the ability to replicate SIVA, another artificial intelligence, to create modified constructs and use them against threats. What exactly the Warmind sees as a threat, however, is subject to his personal assessment, which is why he also long regarded the Guardians as a threat.

At the moment, however, there is not much left of the warm spirit that was once so great. After the pyramid ships reached Mars and sent out a shock wave, it was deactivated. It’s only thanks to Ana Bray that he’s still around at all.

She put everything she could salvage from Rasputin into an engram and brought it with her to the tower. All that is known of her after that is that she turned down Zavala’s offer to take over the Hunter Vanguard and instead is researching in a Vanguard lab to somehow restore the Warmind to its former strength. Ana Bray was last seen standing in Zavala’s office at the crisis briefing during the Witch Queen campaign.

Destiny Rasputin
Rasputin is also rooted in the cosmodrome with SIVA in addition to Mars.

What portends the return of the Warmind? During Season 16, a few cosmetics hinted that the Warmind might be returning soon. Including the ship “Archangel- and the Sparrow “Archangel-Zeal”.

In particular, a quote from Ikora Rey in the lore might hint at a possible return:

  • “Time will tell what role the Warmind will play in the war to come. I have a hard time believing his story is over.”

The latest information on Rasputin is that Any Bray apparently plans to build him a special exo-chassis to integrate him into. Perhaps she also uses unfair means and installs Siva technology so that the warm spirit can live.

It is therefore fundamentally possible that Guardians may soon return as “Archangels” and the Guardians can interact with him as an independent NPC.

Not only could he be part of a new storyline, but he could also bring in his centuries-long experience with the dark.

The Guardians may then also need to explore the human settlement “Nefele Stronghold” mentioned at the end of the Witch Queen campaign. After all, according to the Evidence Board quest line, Rasputin is apparently responsible for her being erased from the records.

Theory 2: Destiny 2 is already planning the resurrection of Calus

destiny-2-calus
The Opulent Emperor – Calus

Who is Calus? Emperor Calus is the former Emperor of the Cabal, who was overthrown and forced to flee many years before the Red Battle by Dominus Ghaul, whom he loved like a son. He sought refuge on the Leviathan, and it was with this ship that he once encountered the darkness.

Calus was staring into the void at the time, apparently wanting a deal with the dark. Since then, he has claimed to know the “true truth” about the galaxy. Some time later, the Witch Queen seduced him with a powerful item, the “Crown of Sorrows”, in order to corrupt him.

The Guardians later find the “Crown of Sorrows” on the Scorn-manned ship “Glycon” in the “Ominous” mission. With the help of a tender alliance to the new empress of the cabal Caiatl and daughter of Calus, they try to fathom what is happening there.

It is now undisputed that Calus is still out there and has ties to the dark as well. It is rumored that after the exo-mission “Vox Obscura” Calus may even have become another disciple of darkness.

What indicates the return of Calus? After exploring the new raid, the Guardians also met a student of darkness for the first time, Rhulk. He became a student because he did the unimaginable and wiped out all remaining members of his species except himself.

Calus also met the darkness and was fascinated by it. Since the exotic mission aboard the Glycon, players know that Calus has been desperately trying to communicate with this entity (presumably the witness) again.

Destiny 2 finally reveals the biggest enemy with Witch Queen – but what does he want?

As Rhulk now stands alone, Calus has already hinted that alone “he would watch it consume the light of the universe.” Caiatl, his daughter, and the vanguard already suspect that Calus is still out there planning something. Is he perhaps preparing his return with the help of the darkness? If he wiped out all the cabal, including his own daughter, he might be able to rise to become a student of darkness like Rhulk.

Currently, the current story also reveals that Calus is apparently trying to regain the loyalty of his old troops. In particular, Lord Saladin’s entry into the Cabal War Council does not sit well with some Cabals and may contribute to their no longer being loyal to Caiatl.

Calus currently seems more likely than Rasputin: Currently, Destiny 2’s story offers more options for Calus to get into the action soon. We don’t know where the Leviathan, Calus’s ship, is at the moment. But she obviously doesn’t seem far off.

What do you think of these two options for Season 17? Do you think Bungie will bring one of the two characters back in the upcoming Season 17. Or do you rather think that Savathun will come into focus again. After all, she’s not dead, so she could be the Vanguard’s ace up the sleeve. So let’s look to the future and let us know in the comments your theory and opinion on which story development you think is the most likely in Destiny 2.
