Rumour: The Last of Us Remake has a mode you weren’t expecting

The TLoU remake could have a factions mode again.

The Last of Us will most likely get a remake, we can assume that by now. Several reliable sources have confirmed the existence of the project, and most recently, a Naughty Dog employee even published solid references to the game. In addition to the remake, there is another game in The Last of Us universe whose existence has at least been acknowledged by the studio: the sequel to the popular Factions mode. Until now it was thought to be a standalone title, but multiplayer could be woven into the remake instead.

Will Factions mode get a remake too?

It’s all about this: The rumor came from Michael Huber of the Easy Allies. In a tweet he wrote: “It sounds like The Last of Us remake could include the new Factions mode.” His phrasing suggests that Huber has inside information on the two games.

This would be a surprise: Since Factions 2 hasn’t been officially announced yet either, we didn’t know anything about monetization until now. However, there were many indications that it would be a Free2Play model with microtransactions – or at least a standalone title after the multiplayer could not be completed in time for the release of The Last of Us 2.

First negative reactions: The comments below the post suggest that many fans would not agree with such a decision. “It would be weird to hide a multiplayer behind a full price game in today’s gaming climate,” writes Narastel. “Almost all major MP games are Free2Play and they would exclude a large potential player base.”

But beware: Nothing is confirmed yet, and we don’t know for sure that Michael Huber actually has inside information. It is also possible that The Last of Us Remake and Factions 2 will appear in parallel, but the multiplayer mode is still Free2Play, or at least the model will change after a while. So the remake could be made palatable to the fans.

Even if the rumors are true, Factions 2 is likely to be more than just a remake of The Last of Us’ multiplayer mode. The game or the game variant has been in the works for several years now. Accordingly, the new edition should outperform the original in terms of quantity and quality.

The story should also be important in the MP: Naughty Dog wants to bring their expertise in storytelling to Factions 2 as well. We don’t know exactly what that will look like. But in addition to traditional deathmatch modes, there should probably be more open game variants, reminiscent of titles like Escape From Tarkov and remember The Division.
