I love Terraforming Mars and now the hit board game is free on the Epic Store

Terraforming Mars deserves a lot of love in general - also in the implementation.

Along with video games, board games are my great passion, and the collection that I now have at home is growing accordingly. Many highly recommended games have been released in recent years, and it is not for nothing that I write my annual recommendation lists.

However, Terraforming Mars has a very special place in my heart because it just blew my mind almost five years ago. Basically, as the name suggests, it is about terraforming Mars, i.e. making it habitable.

In the role of a CEO, we initiate projects to increase the water content on Mars, increase the oxygen saturation in the atmosphere and raise the temperature. The linchpin here are a number of different project cards, for which certain conditions are often necessary.

Tobias Veltin

Tobi’s passion for board games was rekindled in early 2016 when, in a social gathering with colleagues, he realized what ingenious representatives there are in this area. The haptic experience fascinates him the most – almost as a counterpoint to the “intangible” video games. Every now and then he also plays conversions – like that of Terraforming Mars.

In addition to the thematic strength of the game – Terraforming Mars is based on current scientific knowledge – I like the enormous variability due to the many maps and that all players work on a plan and terraform Mars together. In the end, only one person can win. In the meantime, some expansions have also appeared, which make the game even more varied and, in some places, more demanding and complex.

Terraforming is also virtual fun

Why am I telling you this? On the one hand, of course, because I want to draw your attention to this board game super hit and I absolutely recommend it. And on the other hand, because the virtual implementation of Terraforming Mars is currently expensive on the Epic Game Store gives. So you save almost 20 euros and get the perfect opportunity to get a taste of the gameplay. And that might even make the board game tasty for you.

Here are a few impressions from the PC implementation in the trailer:

I’ve tried the virtual version myself and I think it’s quite successful. The game is clear and easy to understand, I also like the small animations when new tiles are placed on the Martian landscape. However, many users complain about the many bugs and problems that still exist in the game, which I didn’t notice after my short play sessions. Attention, there is no console conversion yet, but there is an app for iOS and Android, which is currently not free.

My recommendation therefore: Be sure to check out Terraforming Mars if you have even the slightest interest in board games or their virtual implementation. However, I am sending a warning with it: If you like it, there is a real danger that your board game collection will soon grow and thrive.
