Attention fans of cats and escape rooms: a game that combines both things has recently become available in the Nintendo Switch eShop! In Japanese NEKOSAMA Escape -The Old Inn- you have to escape from an unexplored hotel full of cats. And maybe rightly so.

Disturbing cat escape game

The setting is a hostel that has a good reputation for its hot springs. So, on the recommendation of a friend, the game character sets out to explore the hotel.

What’s so special there? The friend recommends the hotel for cat lovers and with good reason: There are cats all over the hotel that are behaving strangely. Some cats are playing card dominoes, others the Japanese board game Sugoroku in front of a dresser.

On YouTube, user audapostrophe shows how the first ten minutes of the game unfold in a gameplay video:

The main character now has the task of solving the inn’s puzzles in point’n’click style and helping the cats with their problems, such as missing cards. Number puzzles or other mysteries have to be solved. The principle is similar to escape rooms, which are currently very popular.

You can see which switch games we find just as disturbing or absurd here:

Scary cats love games

But the visuals of the game are really disturbing. Instead of cute cats that just want to be cuddled, the hotel features humanized cats with elongated limbs that walk on two legs. So it’s no wonder that the main character wants to escape from the bizarre hotel as quickly as possible.

As in a real escape game, there are hints on certain puzzles in case things get particularly tricky at one point. There’s even an option to jump straight to the solution if you’re the particularly impatient type.

How expensive is the game? The cat escape room currently costs a whopping 4.49 euros in the Nintendo eShop of the switch. However, you should hurry if you want to try the game yourself, because the discount is only valid until May 13, 2022. After that, the game will cost 8.99 euros.

Will you give the game a chance or did the visuals scare you off in advance?
