LoL: 4-time champion comes out – “I’ve heard anti-gay stuff on almost every team”

LoL: 4-time champion comes out - "I've heard anti-gay stuff on almost every team"

In League of Legends, US player Vincent “Biofrost” Wang (25) came out as gay. Biofrost was 4 times champion in the LCS with Team SoloMid. Now he plays for Dignitas. According to Biofrost, he has heard homophobic statements from almost every one of his teams. The gaming industry is full of sexism and homophobia. Something urgently needs to change.

Who is Biofrost?

  • Vincent “Biofrost” Wang was born in China but came to Canada when he was 3 years old. He is considered one of the best and most successful support players in US LoL of all time. He is known for playing with heroes like Thresh or Karma.
  • Biofrost’s most successful streak in League of Legends came alongside ADC Doublelift on Team SoloMid, winning three straight US Championships in 2016 and 2017. After a disappointing Worlds 2017, however, TSM completely changed the team, they also wanted to be successful internationally. But that went wrong and Team Liquid won the next championships, where Doublelift had switched.
  • In 2019 Biofrost came back to TSM, they also got Doublelift again and TSM became champion again in summer 2020. Meanwhile Biofrost plays for Dignitas in the midfield of the LCS. In 2022, without Biofrost and Doublelift, TSM is again in a deep crisis.

Gay LoL Pro Leaves Turkish Team – Says Teammates Insulted Him

Biofrost feared losing his job if he came out

This is what Biofrost says now: In a May 7 post on Twitter, Biofrost spoke about his experience of being gay but only now coming out at 25. He says:

“I’m gay. I’ve struggled with my identity my whole life.”

Biofrost explains that even as a child, he was confronted with not acting “like a girl” but acting like a man. He was bombarded with sexist statements.

He always had to be careful how he behaved and that he didn’t sound “gay”. However, he was constantly bullied and bullied at school. Biofrost says: No child should ever feel like they don’t belong.

Then, when he worked in the gaming industry, that didn’t exactly help:

“With almost every team I’ve been with, I’ve heard anti-gay comments, either from my teammates or the staff, and I’ve felt uncomfortable. I was really afraid of losing my job if I told the truth.”

But now he is at a point in his life where he has accepted who he is.

But he is not an isolated case. The gaming industry is full of prejudice, full of sexism and homophobia. You have to educate people in e-sports to behave correctly in the workplace. Everyone must treat the other with respect.

He’s not making this announcement because he wants to share the details of his personal life with people or because he owes it to anyone, but because he wants to raise awareness of the issues the community is grappling with.

Here are the reactions: Many of Biofrost’s former LoL companions have spoken out and said how proud they are that their friend found the courage to speak out like this:

  • Former team manager Leena Xu: “We love you – no matter what, Vincent.”
  • His former botlane partner Doublelift writes, “You will always be one of my best friends and I’m so proud of you for posting it.”
  • After almost 44 hours, the tweet received over 12,000 retweets and nearly 170,000 likes. BioFrost says he didn’t expect this amount of support.

Riot Games has been trying to raise awareness for the LGBTQIA+ community around LGBTQIA+ lately and made a mark here. However, not in all countries:

LoL proudly celebrates gays and lesbians – Except in Turkey, you’re not allowed there: LGBTQIA+ issues
