New VR technology lets you feel disgusting crawling animals – “I just missed spiders!”

Scientists and engineers want to make the experience with VR more and more realistic and better. A research team from the USA has now equipped a VR device with ultrasonic transducers. And the result is fascinating and scary at the same time.
Scientists expand VR device with ultrasonic sensors
What exactly was done? A group of scientists from Carnegie Mellon University’s Future Interfaces Group has added new technology to the well-known VR device Oculus Quest 2.
For example, the team equipped the VR device with ultrasonic transducers that can generate ultrasonic energy. This area is mounted directly in front of the Oculus Quest 2’s visor and faces the wearer’s mouthparts.
The energy directed at the mouth creates sensations that can pulsate, brush across the lips, or vibrate at varying speeds and intensities. The user should then be able to empathize with certain real feelings. For example, you should be able to perceive when the wind brushes your lips or you feel water on your face.

how does it look in action? A young woman was allowed to try out the extended device in the laboratory. She had to run through a dark forest and fight her way through spider webs. In the end, a spider jumps on her and she can feel the spider’s legs trying to get into the person’s mouth. At the end a spider bursts and she can notice the virtual spider slime on her lips. The participant shows that she finds this visibly uncomfortable.
But there are also positive things. The test person can also feel a water fountain on her lips or how she drinks a cup of coffee. The technology could therefore still offer a lot of scope for some experiments. You can watch the entire video on YouTube:

A third explains that such technology could help other people in the future. For example, you could use it to combat loneliness and give people a feeling when they are kissed:
The only thing we really need is the feeling of being kissed. Combined with realistic graphics indistinguishable from real life, the VR simulation of the future may allow the world’s billions of lonely people to experience love and affection whenever they need it.
