ZTE Axon 40 Ultra: the third generation of cameras under the screen reaches the top of power
ZTE returns to the charge. After presenting the ZTE Axon 30 5G in the middle of last year, the Chinese firm has just launched in its native country the ZTE Axon 40 Ultraa premium high-end device that, how could it be otherwise, is the third generation of smartphones with a camera under the company’s screen.
The device has been launched in China and, for now, there is no news about its possible arrival in the global and/or Spanish market. We’ll be watching to update when it does, if it does. In China it will be available for from 707 euros to changealthough the most expensive version, with 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage, amounts to more than a thousand euros at the exchange rate.

All screen again
The ZTE Axon 40 Ultra is somewhat reminiscent of the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. Thus, it has a clean and simple back with a generous top module of cameras in which we find the four sensors, the LED flash and some recorded specifications. Said rear is curved to improve grip and also available in silver or black.
However, it is on the front where we find the crumb. The device incorporates a curved AMOLED-panel (71º) of 6.8 inches, FullHD + resolution and 120 Hz refresh rate. As we indicated before, the camera is under the screen, this being the third generation of ZTE terminals with this feature.
This, of course, implies improvements, at least on paper. The device incorporates a diamond pixel structurean independent driver for the pixels, a UDC Pro chip for the screen, a transparent distributed circuit and an AI system that, in a nutshell, has allowed the company to improve the area that covers the camera.
Devices with cameras under the screen work in a relatively simple way. The area of the panel under which the sensor is located has a lower pixel density to improve transparency and allow the light to enter. That is why there is less sharpness in the elements displayed in that area and, when backlit, you can see that region without problem.
ZTE, however, claims to have increased the pixel density of the region that covers the screen up to 400 pixels per inch. We will have to see how the camera performs on a day-to-day basis because the results achieved to date are improvable.
power in abundance
Under the hood we find the latest of the latest components. As expected, the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra features a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 (GPU Adreno 730), up to 16 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 1TB of UFS 3.1 internal storage (yes, UFS 4.0 already exists, but it’s not available yet). To prevent overheating, a vapor chamber cooling system has also been added.
The operating system is Android 12 with MyOS, the ZTE layer, and is powered by a 5,000 mAh battery with 80W fast charging. In terms of connectivity, nothing is missing. The device has 5G NSA/SA, WiFi 6E, NFC, GPS and Bluetooth 5.2.
The three main sensors of the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra have 64 megapixels of resolution and 8K recording
And we end up talking about the camera, a section that is less interesting. ZTE has not skimped on pixels and has put three sensors of 64 megapixels each under each lens. The wide and wide angle is a Sony IMX787, while the 5.7x optical telephoto is an OmniVision OV64B. All three record in 8K. The front camera, remember, under the screen, has a resolution of 16 megapixels.
