A legend says goodbye: Apple decides the end of iPod touch

An era comes to an end: the iPod touch is no longer produced. The seventh generation is the final model of the iconic MP3 player, Apple announced yesterday. The company gives the reason for the iPod off and whether it still thinks music is important.

As a reason for the off, Apple states that the iPod touch has become redundant among all other Apple products that can play music. “Music has always been a big part of Apple, and the iPod has brought it to hundreds of millions of users, not only impacting the music industry — it’s redefining how music is discovered, heard and shared,” writes Greg Joswiak, senior vice president of the global marketing by Apple, im Apple Newsroom.

And although the iPod is gone, music playback is still very important to Apple. “Today, the spirit of iPod lives on,” Joswiak said. “We’ve built an incredible music experience into all of our products, from iPhone to Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and across Mac, iPad and Apple TV.” The company also notes his contribution to new music technologies such as spatial audio.

Apple marks the end of an era

Apple introduced the original iPod 21 years ago. At the time, the iPod was a revolutionary product because music fans could easily carry their entire music collection in their pocket and listen to it on the go. The success of the iPod led to Apple releasing more models of the legendary MP3 player. Including the iPod Shuffle, iPod nano and also the iPod touch.

The first model of iPod touch was released in 2007 and it was the first iPod to support Wi-Fi. Over the years, Apple released a total of seven generations of the iPod touch. The last generation was released in May 2019. With the production stop of the iPod touch, Apple is now sealing the final end of the iPod.

iPod touch remains available for purchase

Even if Apple stops producing the iPod touch from now on, that doesn’t mean that the MP3 player will disappear from the shelves immediately. Remaining stocks should still be available from dealers for quite a while. If you want to secure a piece of music history, you shouldn’t wait too long to buy it. If the iPod touch is only available used, the nostalgia prices are increasing.
